    Licensing question

My company is exploring the idea of employing one or several opticians to travel to our locations around the country, rather than employing people at each individual site, in order to save money. Aside from finding the right people who want to travel, is this possible, or do licensing requirements that vary by state make this a logistically absurd proposal?

Licensing requirements, where a license is required, vary from state to state. This sounds like a logistical and financial nightmare.

Understanding the laws in Georgia, very well, since I am on the licensing board, it wouldn't work at all here. As curious cat mentioned, laws vary from licensed state to licensed state, and even if a person were licensed in say, Virginia, they couldn't practice as a licensed optician in Georgia, unless they also held a current Georgia license.

    Wish you weren't anonymous...:)

It would be a logistical nightmare but why bother. Opticianry, from an operational point of view, is virtually unregulated in the US. Many states have no regulations and those that do would take years to shut you down.

Just go for it. You dont need no stinking licenses.

the profile says they are a optical wholesale lab, so there is no licensing that I'm aware of unless they are sending a dispensing optician around the country.

I've seen this in other industries and it is a real nightmare. Let the idea die a quick death.

Be careful Dick, these people may start to believe you! "virtually unregulated" is a whole lot different than "many states have no regulations".Most of the forward thinking states allow licensure by endorsement, saying, in effect, that if you come from a state with essentially the same requirements for licensure as yours, you may be granted a license. Many states require the passage of a practical exam, which is the reason NCSORB was trying to put one standard exam into effect . You all would have laughed out loud at one meeting in which I challenged another member by saying a PD in MA was the same as a PD in any other state. (His) He tried unsuccessfully to tell me it was different in his state. With minds that narrow this profession definitely has a problem. If GA requires passage of ABO and NCLE as well as a practical exam, what is different than MA which requires the same standards. The obvious answer is that there is no difference........other than that of protectionism! .....and therein, lies another problem.

Voluntary registration with the Department of State Health Services with proof of ABO and/or NCLE. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/optician/opt_forms.shtm

Other than that, so far, if you have a pulse, you can be an optician in TX. Nothing else required.

Some places here do require you have at least one finger and opposable thumb.
