Check out how non-eyecare industry visonaries respond to today's vision challenges

    http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/yves-behar/

Reminds me of both the original Swatch & Smart cars.

For me, *this* is real ingenuity..the real thing...
not overpriced boutique eyewear frames that are wholly devoid of any true originality in design thinking, execution and approach.

    Discussion?

I'm failing to see the originality.

"about one-tenth of the country’s children do poorly in school simply because they can’t see well. That’s not just because glasses are expensive, but also because in Mexico they’re often perceived as evidence of a handicap. In an attempt to address both problems...."

Ok, it addresses the first but how does it address the second? If glasses are percieved as a handicap how is calling attention to the fact that you are wearing them via big green frames going to help? Nice try but it won't work.

Maybe it's just me. (and OBX), but what the ingenious part, the fact that they're $10, or the fact that they scream (in neon) PROSTHETIC EYEWEAR APPLIANCE!"?

Both. No eyewire screws is a plus.

But I don't see their appearance as "PROSTHETIC EYEWEAR APPLIANCE".

Rather, I see all the mee-too Wayfarer-like zyl styling as PROSTHETIC EYEWEAR APPLIANCE.

I think that's why they fell out of style in the first place.

IDK - they scream custom colors ("customize them using a smorgasbord of color options"), they are original, the design is not limited to that shape, they're cost effective, and they meet a need in a country that has a huge problem getting kids to wear Rx eyewear.

    Seems pretty ingenious to me.

I'm with Coco on this one. Kids don't want to wear them, so you make them look like a bad LSD trip? Why not just sell them a Sill. knock-off? NO frame, on-obtrusive, and I can retail them for under $10 just as easily as they can.

(And I can do that w/out screws as well...)

I'll never disagree with you on that one! Most of the RB zyls are hideous. If the point is that they are better looking than many of the Lux frames...yeah, I'll give you that.

Only $10 ?? Hell, if they're percieved as evidence of some kind of handicap why don't they PAY the poor kids $10 to take them.

Does this make you want to support the Augen line of lenses since they're involved with this?

Augen is still independent. They do make some decent lenses.
