Is there a big difference in the generator's used in free form technology? Is it the software or the actual generator or both. I ask this because someone told me they can do better with free form (shamir) as they have the "Snyder Generator" ???

They have a reputation for making some of the best equipement, free form or otherwise. However, this reputation has made them more popular recently and I've heard that their customer service is starting to slip.
We use a Satis Loh VFT and it works great (we're running both Shamir and Seiko Free Form). As far as software goes, for Free Form it's provided by the lens vendor (Shamir, Seiko, etc.). All of the Free Form generators work pretty much the same way, with a small lathe that actually "shaves" the lens rather than grinds it. It allows for much more precise optics, complete progressive powers on the back surface of a lens, and they are all cut to polish.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
I'm a big believer in the DAC system http://www.dac-intl.com/ just because of the versatility. I don't think one brand will make a better lens than the other. Quality is in the software and lately I'm thinking also in the operator. Don't worry about what brand they have, worry more about the end result.
