Got an email from Transitions that transitions extraactive is back.
Sounded good, until I got the lens availability, mostly high end lenses and no flat tops.
Is it just me? I always thought of the Xtra active as the "old guy" lens who missed photogrey.
I would sell the bejesus out of it if it came in any flat top.

Transitions Xtractive uses the transbonding process, meaning it is not available (yet) in 1.50 index....only Poly, Trivex, 1.60, 1.67. There is not a transboded ST28. The Trivex ST28 uses the imbibing method, and thus is not available in Xtractive.
I don't believe that Transitions positions this round of Xtractive as 'the old guys lens'. They bill it as the lens for someone who wants a darker photochromic, even in warm climates. Here's a bit from a piece they sent out yesterday:

Xtractive also gets to about 50% transmission behind a windshield.
Its unfortunate that they choose to re-use the Xtractive name. Based on the old positioning of the original Xtractive product, many ECP's will also immediately associate "old guy lens" with this new product.

Rick is correct, the Transitions XTRActive standard index will be available later this year, probably Q3. That is when segmented products will be available.
The name and product tested very well with ECP's and consumers study groups and in last summers wearers tests.
The original XTRActive was a popular segment of our product line. True it was launched for that group that liked the look of a PGX that was 18 months old, it also developed a following with younger people who ordered it with flash mirrors.
I am excited to see how the new XTRActive performs in high heat areas of the country.

Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

Just a light tint, 83% LT inside, 89% LT with AR.
What is interesting, in the wearers test, most patients considered them as "clear" indoors..but the same % of ecp's in the survey considered it a light tint.

I remember the next generation of transition, the lightest color is similar to Xtractive, is it a big difference betweeen them?

My flat top wearing dad just called from Florida to complain about the hazy edges on his year old specs (another Life Rx delamination) and that non of his changers ever was as good as glass.
I ordered him Transitions but so wanted the Xtraactive.
When it comes out in FT this fall, it is just so going to be my old guy lens.
Gonna be some major whining at VEE.

Release is March 1, 2010 for most styles. Usually, however, it takes a few days for labs to figure out their pricing, etc.

Thanks. I went to the sight, very informative. It was odd I called one of my less frequented labs and they said they have Comfort plastic xtraactive (which is not listed on the availabiltity sheet). I ordered it just to see what kinda smoke they're tryin to blow....;)

Hey there.
I am an optician and did a test product for the lenses so I can give you first hand experience.
They have a nice greenish indoor tint... looks great with new green colour that is popular on most frames today. I have light sensitivity so it takes the glare nicely off flurescents. I do also have AR on them. They do darken quite well in a car. (I drive a beetle) They do take longer to clear up than other transitions but I am really enjoying them. When the FTops come in the will be great for the old photgreys....
so I give it a thumbs up.

We just got in a pair and it is really a lens you that allows one pair to do all. I hate to admit it and will not promote as a night lens, but it did meet the European night driving standards. You can get a bifocal by ordering a digital blend from Pech; they are the bi focals of the furture and awesome for golfers or fisherman.

For those of you who have sold/purchased these lenses are the price the same as Transitions or or the labs charging more for the XTRActive?
XTRActive is typically about 10% premium over Transitions VI at the wholesale level.

Product review in 90-degree heat:
1. Sunglass dark. #3 true gray.
2. Quick to darken. About a minute.
3. Tested in car. 50% transmission seems right, kind of like a #2 tint.
4. Indoors takes about 10 minutes to go to baseline. Kinda slow.
5. Indoor tint is like a #1 gray. Maybe AR would help.
Interesting note, they will need to have the bevel moved forward like on a poly sunglass, because we were getting a clear ring effect on this pair.
Impression: Will satisfy as a true sunwear. Only price to pay is indoor tint (but could be mitigated by AR).
