    Funny you should post that.......

W.hen I saw the article in today's paper I was going to cut it out to send to you because of it's mention of the old man in the mountain. You were the first person I thought of when I read it. It is interesting to note that the Australians needed a cyclone to get the record and NH just needed the wind but that's another story. I also thought of my son and daughter who climbed Mt Washington with me a number of years back. We were in the weather station museum which displays the log which recorded the event.

To give you some idea of the weather there, we climbed it in late june. We left the Pinkham Notch lodge at about 9:30AM and it was a scorcher. Temperature was 87 and the humidity was well up there too. We hit the tree line about 2 and the temperature was 54. We spent the night at the Lake of the Clouds hut and the temperature went below freezing. There was skim ice on the lake the next morning. When we got back down, the temp was still in the high 80s at the base.

Mount Washington can be an inhospitable place. I am going to be going by the "old man" at the end of next month. I'll look up to where it used to be and pay your respects to him. best from harry

    Old Man...

Harry, I remember taking weekends off from my job in Connecticut in the fall back in the 70's to go to Franconia Notch State Park and take photos of the area.

5 hours up, 5 hours to walk the main trail and take pictures, and 5 hours back to home. I still have some wonderful pictures of the Old Man and the Flume and Gorge.

I think I remember hearing about that - didn't he just crumble and fall?

I didn't realize the old man crumbled! That would actually explain an episode on the Simpsons where Bart causes a similar rock feature to collapse in Springfield!

87 degrees was a "scorcher?!?" Hmmm, you need to visit Dallas in July sometime! I think we had 60 100+ degree days a couple Summers ago...

Pete, you try climbing a mountain in 87 degree heat with humidity almost 90%, than come back and tell me what a scorcher is. Actually I was making a guess as to the temp at the base lodge. I do know it was 54 at the tree line and I was very happy when we got there. I do not do heat well! By the way, Katahdin was the last mountain I climbed, and the last I'm ever going to climb! :):)
