    Hi,

That was interesting I got a speed of 22down/23up on a compaq presario with a 56k modem. So far not interested in switching to DSL. Thanks for the link.

    Angry ups & downs

Cox Communications (cable provider) suffered some difficulties over the weekend - their network was down Saturday morning, and when it came back up, it seemed sluggish. The speakeasy test reported both ups & downs in the low 200's.

This morning it appears to be back to normal, and the test reports 1447 down and 169 up.

Interesting, in Arizona I have Cox Cable too and we also had very slow connections over the weekend. Things seem back to normal this morning though. It must have been a system wide problem whatever it was.

    Thumbs up Hi all

I have Time Warner Road Runner. The Speakeasy site said I was running 36 times faster than a 56 K modem.

At least it is some improvement over my old dialup.

Huh........that's odd me to. Although i have AT&T Broadband and they are going through some changes they did not send any info about an outage.I had no email all weekend long but i was able to surf the net rather slowly. Which reminds me ......Steve my email address is going to change in a month or so due to the AT&T switch...i take it i'll have to provide you with that for the OB email address?

I really do like the cable modem. I have a dialup at work and it drives me nuts.

    MVEYES,
Same here. I have a cable modem at home for now............Looking into a 100mbps/T1 line.May have to wait.......for a bit...........if the service shows up(which is supposed to happen soon)i'm there. If not....... i'm very happy w/my cable modem.......I'm on the fence with this. I don't know if my connection speed will increase enough for me to want to foot the bill for a T1 line.

    Question Sean

What does a T1 line cost? I'm paying $45/month for cable modem.

    Jerry,
It varies from place to place. But from what i know ......no matter what local you are in the price is very, very steep.Much more than the $45.00 i also pay.Like i said in my last post...im kinda on the fence with this. Love my cable modem....and i do alot of up/down loading. But i do not know how the pricing is going to work out(the service is not in my area yet).I will probably stay with my cable to avoid the "Sticker Shock".

    Question T1?

Don't you mean DSL? T1 lines cost on the order of $1000 monthly.

The cost of DSL varies with the speed of service you choose. Unlike cable modems, there are several speeds available; but the one that's competitive price-wise with the cable modem is slower (usually 128K). The DSL guys make the point that DSL bandwidth is constant (that is, if you pay for 128K, you'll always have that much available), whereas the bandwidth on a cable modem is shared with other users on the same segment (whatever that might be), so your speeds vary inversely with the level of usage in your neighborhood.

I think it starts around $40/month (like cable), in the Northeast, anyway, for the slowest service, which would probably be 128K, but could be higher - I would expect the offerings to vary around the country.

I've been generally pleased with my cable modem, but I suspect that not too many of my neighbors are on board.

    Thumbs up Sean

I started in computer science back when I bought my first Apple II computers. I took courses in Basic, Pascal and File management in college after the Apple II purchase. I think programming is great. My son is a computer wiz. I think computer engineering would be great. I would love to build my own system.

    Jerry,
BTW just asked because i dont really see any modem speed difference between the two. Be it dial up or cable.

I still have my Apple II and an Apple IIc. I put them away but my son will occasionally get them out and play games on them. I have probably been through 5 IBM type machines including 2 notebooks since 1988. I have replaced a processor and added ram ("the oil change type stuff")and put in new A drives and CD roms. I'd really like to tear one down and 'soup' it up. I guess that will be my next adventure.
