New PAL from Essilor - Comfort 2

Heard on good authority that Essilor are to launch this early next year. Will replace the existing comfort which will be phased out by the end of 2010.

No completely new lens but based on existing comfort I hear. New logo as well from what I'm told basically a standard essilor 'e' with a '>' but the two are kind of joined together. Will try and source a pic of the lens later.

The Comfort, a few years ago, was the number 1 or 2 selling PAL. People had phenomenal success with it.

So why are they messing with it? Is this going to be like New Coke?

I don't know. But I do not want to speculate until the information is released.

Their "messin'" with it 'cause all progressives MUST move to back-side, DS FF production to reduce the cost and overhead and limited selection of pre -moulded progressives.

    It's that simple.

    Also: It means more $$$$$$!

    Barry

PS I heard that Schneider is now offering a complete "mini" FF solution to labs for as little as $350K. Less than the old premium AR machines, yes?

Could this be another European only release? If you look at the International website, there is the Road Pilot, which is not available in the States. And the Computer Lens is under the Varilux brand name in Europe, while I believe it's under the Essilor brand name in North America.

There will be some problems with logos in the future. What do you think?

I am curious what you mean by it means more $$$$

Schneider does offer an equipment package, (I think it is actually a bit more once you get a laser engraver etc.) and the last time I checked $350,000 was a decent amount of money. At $10 each equipment cost that is still 35,000 pair of lenses one must sell to pay for it, not counting interest if financed.

Oh and did I mention the natural diamonds needed to cut the final surface are more a few $.

Oh and I forgot to mention you will need a lens design program to run it.

And if you want to produce spherical back side PALs you need to get a patent license

And if you want the equipment from Schneider (or any other equipment supplier), to talk to the lens program you will need a Lab Management System.

And the animal rights people will be all over you if you just buy monkeys to run, calibrate, replace tools, and run lenses.

And if you don't have the cash for all of the above you need to convince a lender to finance some of this, and they may want to know if you know what you doing. Do you have a track record producing digitally surfaced lenses etc. etc. (I don't remember this being a part of the stimulis package congress passed)

    But it can be done.
