    Question about lens circumference....

We have been having issues with our lab in regard to cutting lenses based on an archived pattern. Some will come in too large, some too small. Ideally, we would rather send the patient's frame when possible but as you all know, that is just not possible all of the time. I had read that taking the lens circumference is helpful to the lab in cases like this. Is there any type of guideline to follow in how often we should take this measurement, and does it really help the lab?

    Thanks!

When I was in the wholesale lab, circumference was the most preferred and accurate way of finishing lenses without the frame.

The most common device you see for measuring the "C size" is a plastic tape in a jig that holds the lens - this won't give accurate measurements on most shapes. Get a scanner. More money, but cheaper in the end since most labs won't take breakages based on bad measurements. Some labs will cut you a deal on a scanner if you agree to transmit work to them electronically. I wouldn't change labs just for that, but it's a factor.

They only pay those Chinese kids like .75 a day, you can't expect a whole lot of consistency:bbg:. Seriously though, the cheaper the frame the more important it is to actually measure it, which of course you should always do.
