I have gotten back a few responses from friends attending VEW.
Let us just say........................that morgues have more activity!
As one friend said in an e-mail late yesterday;
"The show is SO dead!"
It will be interesting to see what spin the organizers throw out about attendance!
;):cheers::cheers::cheers::D
Fezz......................maybe you are dead wrong..............
Expo Opens Its Doors for Business
LAS VEGAS â
The Exhibit Hall at Vision Expo West opened its doors here yesterday to attendees eager to check out the latest product offerings, fashion trends and advances in technology making their appearance on the show floor. Despite the year-long downturn in the economy, traffic in the aisles seemed steady as attendees and exhibitors alike hit the ground running, ready to make the most of their three days in the Exhibit Hall.
Does anyone know if they put out a list of top 25 independent Labs?
There were last year!!!!:bbg:
Luzerne's still a proud independent.
Where is everyone, I'm at the mgm so far my highlight has been seeing leo in a suit.
Any optiboard gathering going on, I'm already dazed from the show.
No one is back yet!?!?!?!?!?!?
At least VSP's M&M bowl was portioned out into little cups. Only VSP people actually put their hands all over them.
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!
Hey pal! Who are you calling NOBODY????
I was there, as were 15 of my closest friends, and a good time was had by all!
And yes, there was much activity in the aisles! (If you're talking about the aisles at Harrah's casino!) OBX and I had no time making our way from table to table, as we were usually being escorted by the pit boss!:finger: (It's actually true, and at one point, the surveilance video had to be retrieved to get us off the hook!) I need to find better company next time!

I've got to say Mr. Beachman, that if we had video of what happened at that table, we could BOTH be lazy and live on a beach. Not just one of us. That would have made YouTube history!
I've never been at a black jack table where the guy next to me is laughing so hard that he is crying, and needs to have someone else tell him what cards he is holding in his hand. And to think we didn't even get kicked off one table that night!
Air fare to Vegas: $279
Gambling at the casino: $650
Group Chinese language lessons at the black jack table: Priceless.:D

Surprised to see negative comments, because given the state of the economy, the show was only down 6% in attendance and alot of exhibitors claim one of their best shows ever. Vision Expo really doesn't have a need to "spin" the story. The release contains quotes from just a few exhibitors.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
International Vision Expo West Attendance Exceeds Expectations
Eye Care Professionals Choose Show as THE Place to do Business
Norwalk, CT (October 9, 2009) – Preliminary unaudited attendance figures for International Vision Expo West, held last week at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, indicate that 11,758 eye care professionals attended the show, down six percent from 2008 preliminary unaudited attendance. The continuing education program drew 3,873 eye care professionals, while the exhibit hall saw 7,885 attendees. A final complete third-party audit of International Vision Expo West will be available approximately six weeks after the show.
“Given today’s economy, we are extremely pleased with these preliminary numbers,” said Tom Loughran, event director for Reed Exhibitions. “The show floor felt vibrant with new décor and our attendance demonstrates the prominence this event holds for buyers and eye care professionals alike. For exhibitors, this event continues to be the best way to maximize face-to-face interaction with their customers.”
For Satisloh North America, the show was one of their best ever. “We were very pleased with this year’s show and in fact wrote more orders than we have ever written at any International Vision Expo prior to this one,” said Larry Clarke, president and CEO of Satisloh North America. “We showed a lot of new equipment including an entire automated surfacing line and our staff was busy demonstrating nearly non-stop for all three days.”
Tom Castiglione, CEO of Morel Eyewear added, “International Vision Expo West continues to bring qualified, serious, buyers to the show. Morel experienced significant increases in both new customers and orders placed despite challenging economic times. Our pre–show efforts along with those of our partners in the publishing and show management contributed to making this our best show to date.”
Kenmark Optical also had its best International Vision Expo West show, said Mike Cundiff, the company’s chief operating officer. “International Vision Expo Westis the best place to capitalize on the perfect audience. We wrote business every day - each day better than the preceding day - writing orders all the way to the close of the show on Saturday. It was a breath of fresh air to be a part of the positive atmosphere and see the market picking up.”
Rick Noonkester, northwest senior territory manager for Santinelli International summed it up by saying, “[It] felt like the beginning of a new wave of confidence!”
Next year, the conference for International Vision Expo West will be held October 6-9, 2010, and the exhibition will be held October 7-9, 2010, at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. International Vision Expo West has show dates confirmed with the Sands Expo and Convention Center through 2012 and will continue to hold the event each year in the September/October timeframe.

International Vision Expos, the worldwide conference and exhibition for eye care and eyewear, are trade-only events which draw more than 30,000 eye care professionals each year. Co-owned by Reed Exhibitions and The Vision Council, International Vision Expo gives back to the entire ophthalmic community. Proceeds from International Vision Expo are used by The Vision Council to educate consumers about the importance of vision care and the options in eyewear and other related products. In 2008, The Vision Council reached millions of consumers with its messages through marketing materials, public relations outreach and strategic partnerships.
I didn't think the comments were that negative, butmaybe you're right.
If you talk to some of the vendors like Leo, this was one of the best shows ever. Some of the big vendors didn't show, and I took that to mean that they didn't have anything new to show, or didn't want to invest.
I'll be back next year.
