    lab space design

    hi:

my optometrist is going to have a new office. What's a good lab space design if we're going to do some office edging and tinting. Any other things which can be done easily in an optometry office? What's the minimum space required? Will a rectangular space of 5x10 be ok? Do we need a sink in the lab area?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't know what brand of equipment you will have, but many times the manufaturers will help layout a lab using their merchandise.

Absolutely a sink; if you can't rinse lenses, you will have scratch problems by the bushel - get good light, or your workmanship will suffer, you will miss details - get a good air extraction system (a kitchen hood with fan VENTED TO OUTSIDE will suffice) so tint fumes and the smell of freshly ground resins will be out of your air supply - you will want to drill, so consider whether you have counter space for a smart drill, or you want an edger that also performs this function - same with frame scanner - Talk to Leo!

A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!

..................Outisde means directly into fresh air and not into a shopping centre environment as standard neutralizers are very toxic when hot. Long term damage to brain, kidneys and liver as well as reproductive organs is the danger. So a kitchen hood might not be sufficient.

If you can't ventilate use the Micro Tint System which is fully water based and without smells and fumes/

10X10 would be adequate but 10X15 would be best to allow for future needs. Don't forget cabinets for lens storage and water and a drain for your edger so you don't have the mess of buckets.

10x20 you can do future surfacing just make the sink to the left of the edger and add a floor drain to the left of the sink plus with the floor drain for the edger.
