    American Flag Etiquette

As a Veteran it always irks me when these people think they are so important as to issue orders pertaining to the flying of our flag.
I found his email & sent him a copy of the flag code since they must not have it at ASU.

    Update

    Hello Mr. McClafferty:

It was just brought to my attention that only the ASU flag is being flown at half-staff. My apologies and thank you again for writing.

    Dear Sean,
Thanks for the response. I must wholeheartedly disagree. The US Flag code is very specific for whom the Governor may order the flag to fly at half-staff. Even thought I strongly respect the service Walter Cronkite provided our country, I still believe ASU president Crow is out of line in ordering the US Flag to half-staff. You did not state he requested permission from Gov Jan Brewer and nowhere in the news article does it state he requested permission. Are you saying because he was good at his job at being a reporter or that because he was an air force pilot that his service to our country is worth more than my or any other military members service to our country?
To quote the US Flag. Org site We grieve these human loses deeply; however, we believe proper respect for our flag must be maintained - no matter the circumstances.”
    Sincerely, Jim McClafferty

    Dear Mr. McClafferty:

Thank you for your e-mail to President Crow. He asked that I reply directly. Arizona State University can seek permission from Governor Jan Brewer’s office to fly flags at half-staff and this tribute is to recognize not only his importance to ASU, but his service to our country, both a newsman and as a pilot during World War II. Thank you again for writing.

    Is it ignorance or apathy?

    Hard to tell.

So Bob, I guess it was ignorance on my part as I interpreted the article to mean the US Flag. I just didn't recognize the meaning of flying the universities flag at half-mast. I sent the president of ASU my apology.

Not on your part. It sounds like the university either doesn't know the rules or just doesn't care.

It took guts to send that email to the president of the university. I think you were completely correct. It just goes to show there is no common sense requirement for most jobs.
