    Optical Magazine

Can anybody shine some light on which optical magazine is most welcomed by ECP and would be kept in the practice for a while rather than being thrown away after receiving? We are trying to identify one to put in an ad to announce our new eyewear line in the coming fall. Thanks in advance.

I have 24 of them listed by Alexa traffic ratings going to their websites at:
    http://optochemicals.com/web_listing.htm

Earlier expierience having done some advertising for many years, is, that one add will not pay off. You will have to advertise fo a few month until you will get a reaction from readers.

I agree with Harry, Fezz (I still write for ECP Mag) and Chris. One ad, one time won't have much impact. Start with the August issue and make your customers WANT it by VEW.

Oh, and can we see it early??? We can keep a secret, promise!! :D

20-20 seems to hang around the office.....

I was surprised no one mentioned 20/20. Its the oldest and chock full of stuff. A testament to all the mags mentioned so far is that they are all high caliber.

Don't forget that there is a 3 - 6 month lead time for ads in most magazines. Another way you may be able to beat the ad deadline is to send in a news release, these are generally published as soon as possible.

Here's another vote for ECP magazine (but I'm biased:D;)) Even if I didn't write for the publication, I would still recommend it. As you can see, the editor has great taste in the exceptional quality of people that he has tapped into at one point or another (Fezz, Judy, Donn, Al, Harry, Leo, Bob, Warren, just to name a few)

But I always seem to have a 20/20,VCPN,Eyecare Business and ECP on my desk.
20/20 even did a profile of us in their March 1988 issue.

The question of this thread is not the articles you wrote and how about somebody else wrote about you. That is all nice an dandy and flaterring to the one that writes or gets written about.

How many ads in those magazines have you studied, found good, or bad, and have circled the answer card to get more information?

I have advertised in many magazines over the years and in some years spent up to $ 70,000, paying a $ 1,000 a month for a 1/4 page add.

Having learned how to keep a website at a top ranking and a an expense which is at a fraction the cost of magazine advertising I know that the visitors yo my site want to see something on it. They might visit to buy or just yo get the right information. However it is working 24/7 and is there at the push of a button.

Before I used to get response cards from the magazine that run the ads and produced somewhere 50 to 70 a month asking for more information.

On my website this month up to today so far I have:

    Total Sessions 3,756.00

    Total Pageviews 11,351.00

    Average Pageviews Per Day 810.79

    Average Length of Session 00:05:25

These visits to a website are all there because these visitors chose to go there, looked at total of 800 pages a day, printed them out or downloaded them for one reaon or an other.

That beats for sure the the result of a $ 1,000 add a month with a return factor of 50-70 who want more information.

The magazine advertising can be very effective and successfull combined with TV ads and the help of the Internet, but I believe that only the large corporations can afford that,

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Do you guys think 20/20 would give a more international and more premium image?

I run around 70,000 hits average a month these days. Used to be 100,000, but it seems that everybody, with a few exceptions is down, even the internet feels the recession.

Not so.........................as they have a South American as well as a European Edition going, so if you want to be international you will have to pay x3

I like the ECP magazine and the Eyecare business magazine. Those are usually the two that I read and get some good info out of. IMHO the 2020 magazine is the one that is nothing but ads, there aren't a whole lot of articles in it. My point being you may not stand out if you advertise in 2020 magazine (My disclaimer: I haven't written for any of the magazines)

That's exactly what we are debating internally. We feel and know that ECP and Eyecare have more reading material and are valued by optical professionals. However, it's pretty "dry" for patients waiting in the office. An ad in the 20/20 will appeal to patients more if they have the chance to read it during waiting in the office. Will this be more helpful to the ECP's who are dispensing our frames? Thanks in advance for your comments.

I would NEVER leave one of our trade rags out for the patients to read!

The best advertising geared toward my patients would be the frame that I am wearing.

I get asked about my FreeForm frame throughout the day. Now if I could just get the docs to actually place the order for them we would be golden!

As far as advertising to professionals, I would agree with ECP Magazine and Eyecare Business. Seems kinda strange to advertise frames in a magazine that has another frame company's name printed 4 times on the spine of the magazine itself (20/20).

I have to agree with Fezz on this one. Trade mags are for us not them.

I fear that any ad that you would put in would get lost in the murky quagmire with the hundreds of other ads that all seem to blend into one another!

Fezz.............I love your way of expressing yourself. Never heard that one, so I looked it up, even Wikipedia does not have it. But I found the following:

murky quagmire = In The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals, Charles Darwin writes: ..... a scummy pond, a murky quagmire smelling of rotting plant life. ...

Watch out..........................never have a MURKY QUAGMIRE beer

I thought you meant which magazine the industry likes. Not which one would be good for waiting room reading. Since that is the case I have to change my vote to say none of them would be good for the waiting room. Why don't you try GQ or style or one of those fashion magazines if you want to advertise to the public.

And Chris, as for your Murky Quagmire beer. I think I've had that before. It's called Pabst Blue Ribbon isn't it?
