What are the registration and licensure requirements for an existing practitioner coming from a jurisdiction outside of Canada and the United States?

An existing practitioner from a jurisdiction outside of Canada and the United States must:
    1. Complete the International Optometric Bridging Program (IOBP) at the University of Waterloo.
    2. Apply to the Canadian Examiners in Optometry (CEO) and successfully challenge the Canadian Standard Assessment in Optometry (CSAO) exam.
    3. Apply to the Alberta College of Optometrists, provide all the required documents and complete all the required forms (found on the ACO website).
    4. Apply to the ACO to write the Jurisprridence Exam. This exam can be written after the CSAO exam.
    5. Register with the Alberta College of Optometrists.
Note: a list of approved schools and colleges of optometry recognized by the Alberta College of Optometrists is available on the ACO website.

You can see all of it at:

Based on your current credentials you would not be eligable to work as an optometrist in Canada. Minimum requirement for entrance into the IOBP:

    1. have successfully completed either:
      1. 2 years of university undergraduate courses prior to entering an optometry school and a 4 year optometry degree*,
        or
      2. a 4 year optometry degree* followed by 2 years of optometric work experience outside Canada

    OPTOMETRIST !
yes Chris .........i'm Optometrist for the sake of profession but the fact is If any Optometrist is working for Retail Outlet ,he is involved in many other jobs ,which is infact is not the duty of AN OPTOMETRIST.
e.g. helping customers in selecting frames,Base selection, order lenses, managing inventory and accounts too.
optometrist in UAE is different then other part of the world i think !

A few months ago, a gentleman dressed in a suit came into my store. He told me he had been an optometrist in another country for 20 yrs and he was wondering if we needed a lab technician. I didnt really understand what he was saying until he told me he would settle for any job.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the guy and at the same time I kinda feel bad. But there are a lot of people in this country that are over qualified for what they do.
