    Polycarbonate lenses and NYS Law

I know the obvious and best choice of lens material for children is Polycarbonate, but does anyone know if NYS mandates minor children to be fitted with Polycarbonate lenses? I couldn't find any information to solidify this, it's just what I've always heard and been told.

NYS law does not mandate it. I suppose that's why you can't find anything on it. Seriously, it's not mandated. It's a matter of exposing yourself to our judicial system in the event a child got hurt.

Methinks Fezz was challenging the "obvious and best choice being poly" portion of the statement, not the legal mandating part. I'm not aware of any regulation in any state that mandates lens material.
It could also be stated that the obvious and best choice of lens is Trivex, as it's as strong as poly,is lighter weight, but has waaaay better optics. Obviously though., that's not a factor for everyone, just those who want crisper vision than through poly.

...of course, the whole basis of "better optics" is HOTLY debated, and sound tenuous and subjective at best! ;)

Ah, the debate is only for those who ignore facts.:bbg:
Is poly lighter than Trivex? No.
Does poly beat Trivex in ABBE? No.
Is Trivex as strong as poly? Yes.
Is poly more solvent-resistant than Trivex? No.

What other facts am I missing?

Does poly suffer from hole elongation in drill mounts? YES!
    Does Trivex? NO!
Does poly "spider crack" in drill mounts? YES!
    Does Trivex? NO!
Does Trivex look like a rainbow when viewed at certain angles? NO!
    Does poly? YES!

Is polycarbonate as cool to say out loud as Trivex?
    No!

    Try it:

    P-o-l-y-c-a-r-b-o-n-a-t-e. Very uncool!

    *T*r*i*v*e*x*. Very, VERY cool!

Come on say it out loud with me..three times!

    Trivex is sexy!

Not to mention that Trivex has fewer letters than Polycarbonate, so it's obviously better!:bbg::D:cheers:

I would never accuse Mike DiSanto of "ignoring the facts". ;)

Does trivex have the same availability as poly? NO

Does trivex turn a nasty yellow color in a year or so's time? YES

Does Trivex cost more than poly? YES

Does Trivex offer any great optical advantage that 99% of patients would even notice? NO

    It's easily arguable either way.

BOTH are perfectly acceptable lens materials. I'm not sold out to a single camp, or lens material - but hopefully to remind that much of what is commonly believed to be "true" about the "poor" properties of polycarbonate - particularly pertaining to the current generation poly lenses that are available, just doesn't hold up under many...perhaps even most real world scenarios.

Wow Fezz, that is much better sounding!
