There was a time when corset or collar stays were commonplace on the bench. What were they used for?

Let's hear from some lab people out there. I maintain only a lunatic would have had a can of gas in an optical lab. In the old days for sure with all the guys smoking in the back room. With universal solvents and mineral spirits why in heavens name would anyone have used gasoline. Thumbs down on anyone who did. Never saw any gas in any lab I hung around, and I can promise you it was considerably more than one or 2.
