There are good and bad examples of both professions. I know personally of some examples.

*an optometrist who refused to pay income tax and was charged with tax evasion.

*an optician who defrauded Green Shield for several years and is now selling used cars.

*an optometrist who was caught by his wife looking at internet porn between refractions and having sex with his receptionist.

*an optician who sold fake prescription Oakleys to customers and then beat up an old man reporter who came to investigate.

*a whiney optometrist whose practice was not doing well so he had to work as an associate at a discount store and while there was trying to steal customers.

*an optician who was wanted by the FBI for child molestation.
That's all about money and sekkssss !!! :p:p:p:p

It's not about having too much, it's about the way we use them !!! :hammer::hammer::hammer:

As long as it's well done.
I like to abuse good things, but with moderation

When's the last time you heard a vendor rebate cheque get paid to the practice name and not the individual itself?

    Hi All,

Wow, the OD - Optician fight on this board is really something I don't see and feel in my day to day practice (Quebec). Is it the real situation you are having in the rest of Canada ?

Sorry for my poor english by the way.

Is are my thought about what I can remember after reading this thread.

INTERNET is a treat to BOTH optometry and optician !!

I don't know for you provincial law, but illegale pratice of optometry or optician is NOT a criminal offence !!! It is a penal one ... there is another treath saying that the college of optician have depose CRIMINAL charge for illegal optician activities in Quebec, this is false ... those charge are PENAL one ... the difference is HUGE !!! Why do you think Ontario college of optician have so much trouble closing the great glasses ??? Penal charge is like a high speed ticket .. nothing more !!!

There is no link between OD prescribing drugs and optician doing refraction, optician want to enlarge their scope of practice, ok, but you have to come with better argument then trying to make a link between OD and TPA, I personnaly increase my income by less then 100 $ a week with TPA, OD are getting TPA because ophtalmology is now in favor of it !!! They realise that they make 400 or 500 $ for a 30 min cataract surgery, why would they spend 10 minutes for a small infection and get 25$ for it ?? The number of eye surgeon is to low for the futur eye surgery need, a new way of dispensing eye treatment have emerge from this situation.

I really don't know deeply the optician situation in your province, but here in Quebec, almost any optician who wants an OD in he's office, can have one. I still wonder why would an optician want to perform a refraction ... I mean taking 15 minutes for what ?? 25 $ .... the same optician, with the same patient and the same 15 minutes can offer and explain how many products that the patient could benefit ?? AR, sunglass, computer glass etc etc. Those 15 minutes can increase your average sales by patient by at least 100 to 200 $ ... lots more profitable then the 25 $ refracting one ??

Many OD I know in the 80's where openly against optician, now guess what !!! they have some working with them in the same office.... (I personaly have 2 in my office, and I just interview for a 3rd one last week.) I wish to both OD and optician to overcome those old fighting mentality and find mutual advantages for BOTH your patients and yourself of working together.

    Have a greath day

Poor guy missed the half-second needed to react quickly.

His family will sue the Internet seller. They will probably loose because of all the very small caracters and twists the Internet seller put all over his website to protect himself legally. Even if they won, the company will get into bankruptcy anyway.

So the family will want to find who's next to sue.
Who knew that ? Who let that company sell that crap ?

Opticians, optometrists and their Colleges, boards, associations....
You knew and did nothing ?

They will win a LOT of money.

Then our governments will ask : hey ! what did you do ? Why didn't you do your job ? You are supposed to be the ones who know about vision.
Few people will say : "we have warned you, but you though it was all about money, so you did nothing, you didn't hear us"

Then, maybe, professionnal laws and the way they are administrated will change.

As always, things change when sh...t happens.

Sorry again for my bad English writing.

This hypothetical situation will never arise anytime soon...Since nobody ever checks the vision angle and whether or not the person could see properly.

Hope your laws are better than in BC.

Are Ontario laws same as Quebec ?

Reserved acts in Quebec: any act that consist in SELLING, posing, measuring, ajusting and replacing an ophtalmic lens.

That was the start of the thread
