I would try Ebay. I've been seeing them there for cheap.
The traditional lens tinting unit is actually a "serum bath" and typically sells for about half the price of its optical brother. When I first started tinting plastic lenses I used a crock pot full of mineral oil and a couple of beakers.
I remember sticking a mason jar in the salt pan and charging 10 bucks for the job! (child of the '60's)

Another solution is also the following: If you own a microwave or purchase one for about a $ 100.00 -------------------> you could use the MicroTint system. If you don't tint big a load of lenses one bottle of dye could last you up to one year.
That would actually be the cheapest solution for the fastest lens tinting on the market. See the post and video on it in Marketplace.
Did you also use "easter Egg Dyes with vinegar? " ........then you got them all beat ..........................:D..................................

Go to the Salvation Army and you can pick up a bag of red clothes for about $2. Toss the lens in the washer (gentle cycle/hot) with a pair of red undies, and a few cycles later, you've got a rose # 2. Granted, getting a gradient can be tricky, but a good optician can do it.;)
You can do other colors as well, but I don't want to give away all my secrets!:bbg:

If you use spray paint with the correct technique you too can tint lenses. I have a spray booth set-up in the alley behind the office.
Thanks so much for everyone's input ~ I have found what I needed.
