    Essential Equipment

This could go under Harry A's Tips on dispensing but I hope it will be added to enough to deserve it's own thread. I don't have time to list all of mine this morning but will add more later and hope you will list any tool you can think of...

    1) Assorted screwdrivers, preferably of the the type that hold the screw until started in both Slot and Phillips.
    2) Plyers of many types. Both coated tip and bare. (Will list more assorted types later).
    3) Some sort cable drill, with an assortment of drill bits, collets, and dental burrs.
    4) Rulers.
    5) Fishing line in poundages from 15 to 30.
    6) Heat source preferably both salt pan and air.
    7) Soldering equipment. Either electric or gas. Recently I found that some things that I could not get to weld with butane, worked quite well with map gas (also found a few things that the map gas was too hot for.)
    8) Silver, Gold or Palarium solder.
    9) Frame alighnment bar (Printed plastic devise to put frame on to check alighnment.
    10) Easy outs (burred screwdriver type) to remove stripped screw heads.
    11) Lensometer.
    12) Good lighting over the work bench.
    13) Assorted pens and marking pens for marking lenses, frames on areas to be cut, both indelible and wipe-off.
    14) Grinder
    15) Good assortment of files.
    16) If one fits contact lenses you need instruments to check them with.
    17) Gauge for screw, wire and screw hold sizes.
    18) Jeweler's hammer (aka. Optical Hammer)
    19) Optical anvil (aka: modeler's hammer)
    20) Frame Vise(s)
    21) Helping hands.

    More to come

This could go on forever. There are too many little things that are needed and forgotten by most opticians. I'll be watching the list develope.

Like Jaqui said...we could go on and on...and I think you have a great list started, Chip. I'm going to add, 3 of my favorites:

    1. fine grit sand paper, or a fine nail file for getting rid of the "shiny" polished edge of a lens.

    2. I LOVE my eyewire shaper pliers!

    3. I also LOVE my lens clock!

...I look forward to seeing this list evolve! :)

If I had to I could make do with one screwdriver (not those screw holder ones) with changeble heads and a half-round plier. I do love self tapping screws though and would never be without a container of nuts and bolts. Rarely used but very handy when you need them. Oh and then I guess I would need a nut wrench then.

    tool

the handiest multi purpose plier ever made the pl-5, originally a numont plier , but has many other uses , such as pulling out screws by the head after you have loosened them, without ruining the head of the screw

One of my favorite tools is a self closing tweezer.
I never used it in the past up until 3 years ago.
It makes life so much easier. :)
