"Extinct" bird found - photographed - and umm, eaten

February 18, 2009—A rare quail from the Philippines was photographed for the first time before being sold as food at a poultry market, experts say.

Found only on the island of Luzon, Worcester's buttonquail was known solely through drawings based on dated museum specimens collected several decades ago . . .

Worcester's buttonquail: Tasty, but not on the menu at your neighborhood KFC.

A TV crew documented the live bird in the market (above) before it was sold in January, according to the Agence France-Press news agency.

Michael Lu, president of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, told AFP the bird's [unfortunate?] demise should inspire a "local consciousness" about the region's threatened wildlife.

    I wonder...

If the Wild Bird Club of the Phillipines knew about the newly discovered bird before it was sold for food, why didn't they try to buy it? :finger:

There wouldn't be enough meat on it for a single fajita. I've seen more meat on a butcher's apron.

It could have been a jackpot for the guy that found it!

At our local Fair, PETA took a hankering to a steer that had been featured in the local papers. They vowed to "save" the steer by buying it and taking it to a "rescue"(?) farm. This would have been against our Fair rules as all steers are classified as "terminal", which means that they must be butchered.

What happened is that PETA received a bunch of donations, but in the end, a group of parents chipped in and outbid PETA.

The outcome? The girl that raised it made somewhere around $5,000 more than she would have, and made enough money to enter 2 steers the next year!:D

The steer was one of the many animals that are served to the local businesses and individuals that support the Fair, and I must say, it was delicious!
