    Contact lens ed. for pts

Does anyone know where I could get a video/dvd for showing patients on contact lens insertion and care? Also any print material on care that the patient can take with them. Thanks.

    Try your contact lens mft/supplier.

However never let a patient go home with contacts without you personally sitting down with the patient, instructing them on insertion and removal. And having them do same in your presence to the point where you feel they have a reasonable chance of doing this at home!

Here's a good wear and care sheet you can cut and copy for your patients, you have my permission to use it as you see fit.

I can't remember if it's B&L or Vistakon but one of them had a spot on their website showing insertion, removal and lens care. Contact your CL reps or the company direct.

B&L used to supply a CD with every box of Re-Nu or whatever the juice of the day was then that had insertion and removal shown. They might still have some. I am pretty sure Vistakon and Ciba can also supply similar.
But don't ever rely on CD's or brochures to provide what you should be doing yourself.
It's why you get bigger bucks than Wally who just reads the label on the box.

So far the cl reps I've talked to only have ad stuff to play in the lobby. I've never felt the need as I've always believed in hands on and only let the pt leave with the cls if I'm confident they can remove and take care of properly. However, in the process of fitting one of the physician's kids--who was unable to get the lenses in and therefore did not go home with them-- the mom felt that there should be a video available so she could take it home to help her learn. So now the doc wants me to find this magical video. Actually, I didn't think it would be difficult and I'm really surprised that something like that isn't readily available. Hopefully one of the other reps has something.

Go to mfg. web sites and ask them if they have such available. I'm sure you will find many. Reps generally know only what they were taught in a week and the latest and greatest presented at the last sales meeting. They are after all "salespeople" and if they can't sell it, they don't pay any attention.

The Contact Lens Society of America may be a good start.
    www.clsa.info

Or maybe the Contact Lens Manufactures Association
    www.clma.net

    Or the GP Lens Institute

It's Vistakon that has clips on their website for patient education. It's not a substitute for a real I&R, but it's a decent resource for someone who has trouble at home afterward, or who needs the extra reinforcement.
