My friend has an older Satis Coater (Satis 900) sitting idle in a clean room for several years now which he is now considering to sell. What is the expected useful life for an AR coater? What cap would you put on cost of repair where it would be worthwhile putting the machine back into service?
An AR machine is a stainless steel box with a bunch of peripherals attached to it.
Not much can go wrong with the box itself. The mechanical pump will need to be rebuilt, the coating formulas checked, E beam gun refurbished, ion gun checked out, and the cryo compressor and cold head checked out out. The door seals can dry out as can can other seals. In the US this whole job should cost no more than 10K or so. The bigger cost is always transporting the equipment from one location to another. Make sure the cables are not cut but taken apart and labeled as to where they came from.
Dont spend extra on upgrading to a fancy computer interface, etc. It makes you no money.

but first i need some informations:
what is the controller type? 7000 system, 9000 system
what is the pumping system? diffusion, cryo If i remember turbo was not a option on 900 plant
what is ebg system? leybold, VTD. temescal
do you have IAD system ? (it must be a mark 1)
Do you have some termal evaporation?
The obsolescence of the AR plant dipend from the process you need perform, let me do a example: If you need perform a dobe layer AR in Hight temperature a plent 20 years old can be OK, if you need a process with ione assisted deposition system it is better have plant of the last 12 years (near all the 10 years old plant by Satis have IAD system)
