    UGH! Spectera! Help!

We recently signed up with Spectera, and are little confused about what to do with patients benefits/billing. I've spoken with another office who takes it and they basically deduct $120 off the retail for the frame, but submit the claim with the amount of wholesale-WFA. Also, they charge U&C for AR (Crizal 85, Alize 100) and then submit 75 for crizal and 80 for alize for patient paid. Just wondering what other offices are doing- besides getting rid of spectera! Thanks

    First...welcome to Optiboard!!!!!!!!

Second...with regards to Spectera insurance, I took it (for a short time!)

For my office, I had to send all work to the Spectera lab, the pt paid me for any lens upgrades (these prices were given to me when I printed out the pt's specific benefit plan)...then I had to pay Spectera 80% of those upgrades that the pt paid me. Then, pts got an additional 20% off anytime they come in after the initial order, that was a new benefit added recently, according to Spectera.

The main reason I was unhappy with the set-up, was the fact that I couldn't finish the work in-house..it was so inconvenient for all involved...for example, when the pt came in with a scratched lens, yes, spectera would cover it and remake it @ no charge, but I had to send the frame to their lab...so, unless the pt had a back-up pair, they would have to do without until the new specs came back.

Just my 2 cents..I hope that helps :)

In other words, "Turn around and run the other way!!!!!"

When my office took Spectera 4 years ago, we had an average turn time of 3-4 weeks. Our rejection rate was about 30%. And don't get me started on "THE BOX" of covered frames. Some of the hottest styles from 1987.

    Get out while you can!!!!

    my 2 cents worth:D:cheers::D
A lack of planning on your part DOES NOT constitute an emergency on mine!

The only way you can make money taking spectera is when you have your own lab.

What's Specterrible's policy if patient selects glasses from your usual collections?

The pt paid the difference from what their frame allowance was...then, same as lenses, I paid them 80% of whatever overages the pt paid me...so, for kicks-and-giggles, let's say their allowance was $150...and let's say they chose a $250 frame, they would pay me $100 and I would send Spectera $80...(**random dollar amounts were used in this scenario, and in no way are meant to be a substitute for a pt researching their specific plan benefits :)**)

    Greed.

They're afraid that if they don't take it, they'll be missing something.

Fact is, by taking it they're missing something...profits!

You're right about that, John. That's why I took it...I had so many people coming in asking if I took Spectera, that I thought I was missing something :hammer:, but as it turns out...I really wasn't missing a thing, and I feel completely relieved to be done with it! :)

I was under the impression that all Spectara jobs had to go to their own lab. Can you do it in-house if you have your own lab?

Yeah, but you have to have over a certain amount of offices. (I think it's five or more). I always thought it would be a good idea to co-opt w/other practices.

We only have one retail location. And we have a full surface and finishing lab. We do alot of spectera because nobody else does. It is a different plan we are on called the "patriot"?

Yes, it's called the Patriot plan, but I was told you had to have a certain number of stores to take it. If not, that 's cool.

We take it, and make a pretty good profit on it.

I'm interested. If I can do everything in our own lab, it would be a decent thing for our office. I don't know that I would take Eyemed if I didn't have a full surface lab in our office.
