Question Ethical Query From A Student

Hi, I'm new to the forum and presently enrolled in the dispensing optician course at Douglas College in Vancouver. I've been given an assignment to find out which regulatory body would be best for an optician needing to report an optometrist for questionable practises.

Naturally one would approach the Royal College of Physicians in the case of dealings with an ophthalmologist but I notice that optometrists in BC have 2 regulatory bodies, the COA and the BCOA, and after reading through both sites I'm still unclear as to which organization would be the first organization an optician would approach.

Any feedback on that or any other advice about such situations is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hey Cindi,

Welcome to OptiBoard!! (I'm Myra BTW) It's good to see you're in the course. I hope things are going well.

The BCAO and the CAO aren't regulatory bodies; they're associations. A complaint about an optometrist in BC would go to the Board of Examiners in Optometry. (incidentally your OD is part of the discipline committee of the Board).

It's kind of like opticianry in BC. You belong to the Optician's Association of BC, but any complaints and issues of licencing belong in the realm of the College of Opticians.

Hi Myra!! Nice to see you, it didn't take long for us to find each other. LOL

Thanks for that piece of valuable information. I can now finish up the long project I've been working on. The program is going well, and thanks again for all your support (and everyone else at you-know-where). I'll drop in soon and say hi. :-)

LOL, no, it's not one of his assignments, it's actually part of an ethics assignment in the communications section of the course. I take it you took the Douglas course and had "Mr." Mullo? :bbg:

Not from any wish to exclude discussion from other parts of our lovely nation but it really was more local information I needed. And found. :-)

Don't know about Canadians but in the South, nobody likes a rat fink.

No matter how noble he may feel his motivations are.

If he ain't hurtin' nobody why throw the first stone?

In reference to the assignment I was doing, naturally the issue would be one of serious enough concern that an optometrist was "doing harm". (For example in the Micheal Ng case cited on the Board Of Examiner's website.)

Obviously my instructor feels that a professional should know where to go in the unhappy circumstance when that they might find themselves faced with such a concern.

I'm not sure what it's like in the south, but here in Canada, if we're asked a question for a class, and give a flippant answer like that, you tend to get poor marks. :bbg:
