One of the things I find problematic when dispensing progressives is that I have never worn them before as the result of my extremely young age. It's bizarre to sell something that you have no experience wearing or using before.

Well I am already do use a pal at work. Primarily for office specific duties, and I can tell a huge difference, especially on the computer.
I think a lot of doctors tell patients to wait (or it could be just the ones I have worked with) and either take of glasses for reading, or use reading only.. till the add gets high enough that now it is a major change. Certainly starting at a +1.00 is not nearly as drastic as it is a +2.25, +2.50 like many 1st time pal patients I see here.
I make a point to cover my bases with patients and let them know that there are trade offs.
I know my doc also will *tweak* the rx for reading only by putting a bit more plus in one eye, or doing spherical equivalent, etc.. to help the patient with specific things.. but its throws them for an even bigger loop when we finally do go pal.

Ken you are going through a phase in life which we all have to do and later wish that we would be still there.
When I hit the early 40s I made 2 pairs for myself, one Prgressive and one executive and used them for repairs and as a magnifier. This helped me getting the experience and you should do the same,e, without having the need..
How old are you,Ken?
I sold progressives for many years before I needed them. My husband is 5 years older then me and wore progressives before I did. He had almost no distance correction and I would sometimes put his glasses on over my contacts to "see what it would be like to wear progressives."
I didn't like them, they seemed odd. But when I finally got my first pair and needed them...I had no problems wearing them and didn't mind them at all.
What I am trying to say is, I don't think making a pair with a low add when you don't need them, is really anything like really wearing and needing them.
I haven't had this much fun reading a thread since the "Frisbee Wars". I am really surprised at how closely we seen to think alike! Scary....because I KNOW how I think!

I was in your boat- left the pier about 3 years ago.
For 28 years I was explaining without experiencing but you know what I found? Everything was true!
When you first put them on it will feel a little swimmy. It did. Just try to ignore it and it will go away. It did. Always seek the best vision especially at first while you develop a habit. Check.
Don't take them off. Whoa- Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! I constantly took them on and off for the first 3 months but I knew that eventually it would go away and eventually (3 months or so) it did. So now I put them on in the am when I get in to work and take them off when I go home. Keep a bunch of sv near readers at home and use them at night. I still forget and leave the condo on occasion without them but as I've become more dependent on them it occurs less frequently.

Jus be done to hold the reading card at eye level and look at the smallest print. Then hold your head still and moved the card down. Den you fin out you can see. Problem solved. Patient used to turning head down to read now understand how the whole thing works.

I'm almost 39 and my RX hovers around a plus 3.50/2.75 with little to no cyl. I know I'm nearing the point where I'm gonna be put into a baby add and I'm looking forward to it simply from the perspective of having some actual knowledge about what first time progressive wearers go through. Our store also specializes in LVA's so when I need a magnifier to help me make out etchings on frames that are entirely too small for a hyperope like me to see I have one at arms length.
/waits for arms length joke. :)
