    Product needed

I have been watching an excellent new program on DIY network, called "Cool Tools". The host may be a little over enthusiastic but it will make your wish list get a lot longer than your budget in a hurry.
Today they were showing a "grip tight" bold and screw remover. The screw remover while far too large for optical applications drills the center of a screw head out and then remove the screw with a remover. The bolt remover has cams in the socket that grab stripped out bold heads. They are wonderfull.
Now when they gonna make something like this for us opticians still stupid enough to fix things?

What you are describing has been done in the optical workshop just about forever. One of the first things I had to learn in my apprenticeship.

Drill the screw through the middle and then use the optical punch with a lever and lots of different punch inserts and push the screw out.

If the screws are stainless you will damage the thread, but then cut a new thread and use a wider screw as replacement.

I pick up what you are dropping Chip. I have been waiting to scratch enough coin together to get this:

Maybe we could convince them to make a smaller set for eyewear!

Check with Brownell's, the gunsmith people may have something small enough for optical use. Also see what Vigor, Grobet and Gesswein have in the jewelry equipment line.

Keep them tools and advise coming.

I am enjoyning this discussion and display of tools even if Chris thinks I am even dumber than I am. I just saw the commercial and thier toy workse so much better than ours. I realize that reducing this to ophthalmic size and still maintaing strength might be a technical impossiblity but it sure would be neat. Of course they are not dealing with bolts and screws that have been peened at the other end.

Yeah, peening is banned at my place. Never thought it was a good idea.

Actually a good friend of mine Mr. Billy Price presented his masters with a presentation that included the statement that all screws should be peened before dispenising. I think this or locktite is an excellent idea, don't do this myself due to time conciderations or laziness, not sure which. But often wish I had and wish everyone did. Especially those damn manufacturers of Far Eastern readers with the huge screws. I have enough time every month spent replacing screws to spend another three days fishing.

The feature which makes this work on a conventional drill is the ability for the drill to turn in reverse motion. Most smaller power tools used in the optical lab (such as a dremel) only turn in a foward motion which would tighten a screw to complicate matters.

If you are looking to get conventonal sized screws out you can save yourself the $19.99 plus shipping by using a carbide tapered burr die grinder bit available at your better tool and hardware stores. My father showed me this trick years ago when he was in construction which I recently used to replace some decking with stripped screws this past summer.

Actually I use dental burrs, I'm an ocularist remember. I have dental burrs down to .01 mm. However the gadget would have saved me probably months of career time. Sometimes an hour on a single screw.
Sometimes the screw is so much harder than the drill bit (after the burr) the bit slipps and goes through the barrell. Then I got big trouble.
I am sure this never happens to other opticians, just us fumble fingered ones.

Count me amongst the fumble-fingers, I've had that happen more times than I care to remember. :(

    ?Apply to screw not hinge?

I usually try to use one a little smaller diameter than the screw, if the screw is really tight a little tap with a hammer does the trick, never had a problem. try to apply to the end of the screw not the broken part.

    .
Duh, I'm just saying I always wind up scratching the frame immediately around the screw. Maybe I'm just more clutzy than you.

When pt sees me for broken screw, I say frame is trash, go see Borysko.

    Just a little complainin

I decided that I needed some toggle clamps for a couple projects today.
I went to Lowe's I went to Home Depot, I called a dozen hardware stores. I went to the one with the "helpful hardware man" I called the one with the excellent reputation for having all those hard to find things.
To a man so far they have all said: "What's a toggle clamp?"

Kinds of reminds me of when I used to ride English Motorcycles and called around trying to get Whitworth tools. The very best place in town which has been supplying specialty tools for nearly a century said: "Most of ours is Blackhawk."

Sometimes it's so wonderfull to be living in the South where everyone is so knowledgable in thier profession.
