houseplants at the office (not important) ;)

    Hi everyone.
Just wanted to see if anyone else out there has a green thumb! I'm pretty much the only one in my office with one...if I wasn't here the plants would be dead. I have a bunch at home that I'll trade out with the ones at work, I'll take one home and bring a new one in. I've had all manner of plants on my desk, including an orchid. And most of them have worn glasses (from the spare parts bin, of course! Would never put a demo frame on my houseplants, that would be icky to whoever bought the frame at a later time!) Right now I have a difenbachea (dumb cane) in a pink decorative pot, and it's wearing an old, very broken Priority frame. My favorite of mine was the phalaenopsis orchid--called it my "presbyopic phalaenopsis" b/c it wore broken readers.
Any other optiboarders with green thumbs? Any other interesting "office vegetation"?

My boss has them everywhere in the front part of the building. He's got a green thumb all right! lol I think they're nice for bringing a bit of nature indoors, and they seem to grow well even under flourescents. I don't know how he does it. I'll do well with plants for a while, but I'll forget to water them and eventually I kill them :(

Hey! I am a sucker for plants... I love 'em. Do you have some cuttings from some you would like to send me? I will put them in my office, and you would have bi-continental plants. :shiner: Reports every Friday on the status.

Fezz, I apparently love brown plants. With black spots. And very dry. Dirt is optional.

I have several entities in my office that once resembled plants.

I have a poinsettia that we received for Christmas in 2006. It has been nurtured and loved and is now standing about 4 feet tall and looks great.

I kill all the plants at home but this one refuses to die.

Must be all the Holiday Joy I am full of!

Actually not as unimportant as we think. In this month's Real Simple Magazine, I read that according to a study done by the University of Texas at San Marcos, people with houseplants at work are happier and more productive.

Who knew...of course I assume they're talking about live plants. ;)

    Where do you put them?

Our small lab and optical shop is too crowded now.. I would love to have some green growing things around but no room. Any ideas?

A great idea for small spaces is wall-mounted planters. Something like this:

You can buy them online or get them at places like Petco. They work great as either a fishbowl or a planter. Get a nice ivy to drape down and it would look awesome! Or mix in a few bowls with bettas in them to add even more movement and color.

The easy way to see something green and growing here is to open the refrigerator.:D

Our lab is a jungle !! All the olants that Diane and I don't have room for at home are here and now the highschool kid is starting to bring in hers. And if that's not bad enough, Diane is talking about planting trees and flowers outside next year.

    I love plants

I've had all types in the office. At one time, I had over 30 flowering Africa Violets, and they were beautiful. I would root them, and when they were doing really nicely, would give them to various patients. They loved them. Did well with a couple of varieties of orchids as well. The usual types did great. Heart-leaf philodendron. I also had a couple of large schefflera, one a large leaf and one a small leaf and had one that was varigated. I sat the large leaf one outside beside the door. It was too heavy to move, so it was on a roller, and doggone it if someone didn't steal it in the night. Go figure. I had a couple of large corn plants and in the summer would sit them out on the sidewalk and they would just do wonderful.

When I sold my practice, I gave most of them away, but still have a couple of small ones that are descendents of the ones in the office, like jade, prayer plants, and a couple of Christmas Cactus. I love plants and they love me.;)

I have 2 live plants in the office, and 2 outside. The Doc who was here used to care for them, but she got ill and left 2 years ago. The outside ones are fine. The inside ones are going slowly to their demise, the dumpster. The money tree goes from good to bad, kinda on my good to bad months. ;) The other one just plain old looks sick. Good thing my wife manages the oxygen generators at home, or I would die. Too much water, not enough water, its all very confusing......

Wow, got a lot more replies than I thought I would. It's good that I'm not the only green thumbed person in the optical business.
Has anyone else ever given their plants glasses? Didn't hear any mention of that. The little kids love the fact that my plant wears glasses. I mean, it's an optician's plant so it needs vision correction, and lets face it, plants have no way of wearing contact lenses.
I had some African Violets at the office once, but they didn't like the lighting so they stopped blooming. The orchid did really well, but I've had a lot of success with foliage plants too.
