pupilometer of choice? (and frame warmer)

In my office we're using a rather old pupilometer and the left eye especially is rather hard to see. Given that... what brand/type of pupilometer do you guys use and recommend?

    Thanks :D

(also what frame warmers? I found one with the following statistics:
    Features:

    • Heat frames fast and evenly
    • Electronic adjustable cold and hot temperature
    • Simply switch over two temperatures
    Specifications:

    • Rated Voltage: 220V 110V
    • Heating temperature (Max.): 110 degree
    • Rated Frequency: 50Hz 60Hz
    • Noise: <70dB(A)
    • Rated Power: 500W
    • Power of heating wires: 480W
    • Power of electric fan: 6W
    • Air flow rate: 4m/s
for only $60 plus shipping! From a reputable seller noless.)

    Thanks!

PD stick works good :D Otherwise for those danged progressives needing a mono PD, I use a cheap Chinese made unit I got on Ebay.

Frame warmer - still use a salt pan.

we have sand so it get's everywhere... on the counter (which has little organizers and bottles of cleaner on it) and in the frame's themselves... so i have to brush it off of the area that im adjusting first (so my pressure doesn't damage the frame with all the sand on it) and THEN adjust it... and then blow off the excess sand (since I can't just blow the sand off beforehand since it would cool the frame down)

    lol

Love the Essilor pupilometers. Haven't liked other brands.

Love my BPI hot air warmer. Electric bill went down about $20 per month when I switched from the salt pan.

Some people use sand. I don't know why, they just do.

at this point, my salt looks like sand...but, I've never heard of anyone actually using sand! Although many do ask if it is sand.

I got tired of one of my opticians heating zyl frames with the glass beads WITH THE LENSES STILL IN THE FRAME!

So I took it out of her office and ordered one of these:

I got it from www.superoptical.com for $139. Initially, everyone hated it. Now I love it. It has a rotary heat temp control as well as a heat on/off switch (so it will blow cool air).

But use 4 leap pads to keep it stuck to the counter, it doesn't weigh all that much.

Now if I can only get my boss to stop blowing hot air.....

/obligatory boss joke. Too easy to pass up. :)

We have Essilor's, a cheap one and a Nidek- the Nidek is much clearer to see the dot than the others.

    Hope it helps!

A: Why not take the old PRD apeart and clean the lenses and mirrors?
B: If you actually put Salt in the frame warmer, it can be desolved out should it become entraped between the lens and frame.

I've always preferred salt in the salt pan, the only drawback is having to leave it on 24/7. Unless, you have the time to chip it apart every morning.

Years and years ago we used sand. It's much smaller than the beads and it feels kind of nice on your hand.

Sand can and does scratch lenses and frames, it is after all glass with small sharp conrners. If trapped between frame and it will indent the frame and unlike salt it cannot be disolved out. Salt pan will not clump
if you keep the moisture out. Don't put frames back in it after you have rinsed or water cooled it.
While glass beads can scratch they at least have rounded surfaces and polished surfaces making them less likely to scratch.
While on the subject of scratches, remember the ones you see with the naked eye even in bright light are not the only ones there. Look at any lens with enough magnification in a bright light and scratches are there.
This is why patients always remark that thier new glasses are much clearer even if the Rx was not changed. Also why your new windshield looks so much clearer even if the old one didn't seem to have scratches or defects before you broke it. Also why glass lenses have so much more clairity after a year or two of use that plastic (any plastic) after a few months use.

OK now you can come back with how wonderfull plastic is.s

We have the Essilor Pupilometer and it works the best out of the ones I have used the past 13 years. The beads are messy, and I think unsanitary. When I thing about those those dirty glasses going in there gross. I don't want to touch the frame to adjust it. Germs...

We also have the Hilco Tempmaster frame warmer and it works well. It is pricey, but you will have it for a long time!

Lot's of issues here with salt and sand and glass beads and electric costs and chipping and ruining lenses . . . ad nauseum.

Just dump it and get a hot-air warmer for $69. I have NEVER used a heating pan and I have NEVER ruined a frame. I did ruin a set of lenses, but only one. And I have never scratched a set of lenses in my heater and can't imagine how I could.

This is one time when you shouldn't hang on to the past.

Some things are more of a liability than an asset.

    frame warmer

I've been thinking about this for my first office...I was thinking the Hilco (not the Jr) to be able to adjust the temp. I'm worried about the crystals on the D&G and Dior (and other) frames if they get too hot. I thought about one of the cheap units, but I don't think they heat up as much on the high setting (good or bad, I don't know).

And for those with problems with salt pans clumping, I was taught to put a tiny bit of talcum powder in the salt pan to keep it from sticking together.

Anyone have the cheap kind with a dial (rheostat) to control the heat that they have tried and liked? Can you point me to a web site (or a brand)? Thanks.

Please refer to post #10 with the picture in this thread. Mine does have a dial, but you could call them and make sure prior to ordering. We get our CR39 finished single vision lenses from them and the people that work there area all pretty nice.
