I send everything to Hilco. They do a much better job than I can. ;)

Hilco's is a small jar of powdered silver solder mixed with flux. Works great, and one little jar will last for freakin' ever. :)

I just used it to solder a new tang onto a crappy soft-steel curved dagger my dad brought back from India after WW II. It used to have a hilt and everything till I broke it off throwing it at our tree when I was in Junior High. Dad always wondered where it went, now I'm finally getting around to making a new hilt for it.

I learned soldering as a jeweler years ago, so I'm kinda set in my ways. I'm just used to solder and flux.

I use the Hilco pallarium solder rods, it's a sheet rolled around flux, but I get extra flux 'cause the flux will tend to dry out if t's not used alot. The paste sounds interesting and I knew a guy that used the paste and absolutely loved it. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime soon.

My last square of hard sheet silver solder became a static grounding plate I affixed to the top of our generator below the keypad. Soldered a wire to the back of it, ran it to ground and stuck it on the generator so your hand hits it anytime you do any entry. Learned the hard way how dry winter air, static electricity, and the generator's computer are not compatable with operation.
:o We have anti-static mats but it takes a while for them to drain you.
Yeowch! At least I ended up with the newer PC-based computer box. W00T! A honkin' 386 chip!

Don't want to shock anybody, but silver solder and paste is available at any hardware store , welding supply or hobby craft store.

Probably there too. I just like the jewelry suppliers because the conversation is better and they give me discounts.

As I keep telling you people, try the Tech Colleges and the 4 year schools. Some of them have classes on jewelry making that will help tremendously.

I'm in Little Rock waiting for a ride to the gulf.

My solder prices start $45 and go up from there. (It's a lost art in these parts.)The quote i give depends on what it is, how much the replacement would be, and how good I think it will turn out. How long it takes has no bearing on what I charge.

If it's just for a frame, I quote $45, and then offer them a new disco frame for $50. They usually take the disco, and I'll hand edge their lenses into it. Much easier, much faster.

and you don't charge them for your expertise to hand edge those lenses?
