    press coverage

Whilst the first victims of war a innocents, the truth follows shortly after. Having read papers thro' the Falklands and the Gulf incidents I pass on some observations.
One side will be "well dug in" whilst the other side will "cower in their fox-holes"
One side will engage in "daring raids behind enemy lines" whilst the other side will "engage in cowardly sneak attacks"
You will probably see similar stories for yourselves soon.
Newspapers always give a slanted story which is why I try to read different ones to get a different view. The full truth will never be known.
Is the previous support of the taliban by the usa widely reported in the usa?

Having a former ally turn against us or supporting a former enemy is nothing to to the US....after all, we fought more wars against the British than any other country in our history!

Yes, it's been reported rather frequently. Perhaps this will make people pay closer attention to our foreign policy in the future. I certainly hope so!

You may try the Independent for Robert Fisk's articles, or the New Statesman for John Pilger who brought to the attention of the West in the eighties, the plight of millions of starving Africans...
Amos Oz is not bad either!!

There you go, how about some refreshing reading for you for a change!!!

    Happy reading!

    Confused

Yes todays brother in arms is always tommorows enemy,
If you want the truth never read a paper go and see for yourself.
When will our politicains learn that funding one group to overthrow someone else always leads to having to do the same over and over again.
Having just got back to normality on tv, we are now back to extra news coverage just to show us hazy green pics with white blobs on them wich could be just anything but with a over paid reporter gushing about what is going on............

Did anyone else see the two pictures the Daily Mail had a couple of days ago? The first one was of a man (I think in Pakistan) burning a US flag during a street demonstration, to the admiration of his companions. The second one was taken a few minutes later. The flames from the flag had engulfed his hair and jacket. Needless to say, it got passed round work and we all laughed our heads off :)

I don't know if you have spin doctors over there, but they are basically press officers who put a spin on items of news for the benefit of the government (i.e. make it look better than it is). Well I noticed several stories that would normally have made headline news relegated to page 7 or thereabouts, coincidence I thought. It now transpires a spin doctor was actually stupid enough to send an e-mail saying now was a good time to put out bad news as nodbody would notice! I know it is their job to think like that, but I thought it was a bit much. Needless to say there has been an uproar.

Actually, I was listening to a news report (on NPR I believe) concerning America's prior- and future- relationship with the Taliban. Seems we can't overly support the "Northern Alliance" because our closest "allies" in the region (if you can truly call them allies) are the Pakistanis- who pretty much installed the Taliban in Afghanistan to keep the Northern Alliance in check.

We had many of the same problems in Central America (Nicaragua, I believe) some years back. I think your point is a valid one (that one's press will usually report on things like wars with a slant towards their native country). However, I think you have chosen a poor example for your opinions. We aren't fighting a war of conquest here- and this time you can't even make the fallacious argument that we are "fighting for cheap oil." In this particular instance, America is simply taking care of an enemy who has chosen to bring retribution upon themselves through their actions.

Hope you weren't fishing for us to apologize for that!

    Wink

"Tell people something they know already and they will thank you for it. Tell them something new and they will hate you for it."

Not sure who said it but it seems kinda apt...
