    .50 add PAL

    Hi all -

was wondering if you guys can tell me - all the pal's you know that come in a .50 add -

Personally - I don't see the need for this -
HOWEVER - THis MD will not budge - and when i informed him - the options are limited - HE didn't want to hear anything about it - he actually said - well - at least i was not telling him - that it was not made -

Anyways - Can anyone give me some help with this -

What is actually out there for pal designs - with a .50 add

I thought zeiss made something - but i could be wrong -
in my 15 years - i only can recall 1 other pal - using this add

    thanks in advance
    b

    1. Gradal RD (computer lens)
    2. AO Pro 15 (uncoated only), and Poly
    3. Gradal HS 1.5
    4. Summit ECP 1.70 and Trivex Trans (not clear)
    5. Proceed 1.67, and Proceed II 1.67. And Trans. is available
    6. 1.67 Super Proceed Internal
    7. Round seg
    8. FT
    9. If the patient only needs a 0.50 add, he won't be motivated enough to tolerate any peripheral blur in the distance, so you should fit it low. In that case, just use any 0.75 lens you like and chop off the add.

With a .50 add there won't be hardly any peripheral blur to worry about.

I suggest checking out a fellow Optiboarders website.

TLG has provided us with a great resource on progressives:

    www.thelensguru.com

Another very respected Optiboarder, Keith Benjamin, has a great site as well for his company, Laramy-K.

    http://www.laramyk.com/tools/pal_chart.html

I would assume that any "Free-Form" type lab that produces progressives should be able to make a +0.50 add.

Just to add a few more to the mix, a 0.50 add is irresponsible prescribing if you ask me, is there any notes to why this was fit?

The low Add might be due to a binocular disorder diagnosis. If true, it might be best to use a segmented multifocal so that the full prescribed Add power is realized.

As a prescriber myself, the 1/2 diopter add is really silly.

Heck, the senstivity to the add determination is easily +/- 0.25 anyway.

Consider lighting situations for another +/- 0.25 and you get a silly add.

Essilor Anti-Fatigue lens has .60 diopter change. It is a single vision lens that is created to reduce eye strain.

I'll third the anti-fatigue. It's not actually a PAL, it's prism, but it should give the same effect as this 0.50D add.

i agree with tha last post, just use a .75. there is no way on earth anyone is going to convince me that a .50 add is going to make difference at all to any patient. it's like prescribing down to an 1/8th just doen't make any difference. but the reality is you have to accomodate the Dr.use a .75 in a frame with nosepads and fit it low, or grind an 1/8 sttep or shallow, depending on the rx to make it read within tolerance on a lensometer:hammer:

I'm sure the "75" markings on the temporal side will go over well with the guys doctro especially since he will not budge. You are allowed to refuse service to anyone that is your perogative, maybe he needs a second opinion. Maybe you need more info as to why a 0.50 add, maybe I need a little captain in me, good night.

I suspect this add is like a young secretary I employed. Said she had some glasses from a local well-reputed optometrist for a while. She brought them in for me to check the Rx and said the doctor told her to wear them only for reading.

    Rx= Plano O.U.

Of course I am sure she had some sort of mystical disorder and the doctor didn't prescribe and sell them just to make money.

Any freeform program should be able to make this with no trouble. I wore a .50 add for years and loved the added bit of magnification.

I thought freeform pals are custom from a blank such as a sv - and the curves are ground accordingly - based on the software - and i have been interested in having some of our pts try the shamir autograph -

but when i called the lab to order it - the lab said they started at a +75
i had posted a ? on the autograph recently in another thread - hoping to get some insight on this lens - and have not checked in on it -

but are all the autographs truely a free form pal in all respects - or would it be something differant ? do they start off with a sv blank - and then all the curves are calculated to produce a pal - that is truly customized ? or are they pal lenses - in which the progression is already on the front of the lens and that the back curves are cut with a special generator - producing a more accurate power throughout ?

does anyone here on opti B produce these lenses in their lab currently ? and could explain the technolgy with them - and how they relate to other freeform customized pals out there ?

i have read their web site - and now i am a bit confused - with regauds to the free form tech. and also the options in design that are out there -
are there actually different autograph designs that fall under that one name -

the new design they referr to - that to me - resembles the accolade free form - (( BY that i mean - the pal and progressive channel length and width is produced and customized based off the frame - and seg ht requested - ))-

it also appears to me that is that this may be a improvement over the old designs - however - was this change based in the lens that they start off with - or just the software that produces it ?

are all the autographs the same - meaning - the design was just updated - or would it be something that if u order a autograph - you would need to specify the lens you want - (( old vs new )) -
any help would be appreciated -

    take care
    b
