Interesting question containing an undefined variable. How about assigning a metric to the store volume . . . then you might be able to get some meaningful answers.

There used to be an international standard in Europe that said that a retail optical store with a finishing + edging lab would have to do 3 new pairs of glasses per emploee per day to be profitable.

( 3 people working in store = 9 pairs of glasses)

I dont think 1000 sq feet is small at least for NY!

it's like refractions in this regard, there are too many variables implied in your question.
If profit is the genisis of your question, many variables exist.
    1. Amount you pay for and amount you sell frames and lenses
    2. How much are you paying your staff
    3. If renting or leasing, how much do you pay per square foot, and how many square feet do you have (speaking of the dispensary, not yourself)
    4. How much do you pay for upkeep?(electricity, custodial service etc:)

I am sure there are other variables I am missing, but the point is, like refractions, it is subjective to a degree. However, totalling your expenses compared to average profit per pair of eyeglasses should get you the numbers needed to glean what is neccessary in your own individual dispensary to show how many pairs a day you need to make a profit.
Unfortunately, making a consistant profit entails a lot of work.

thanks for the feedback. i'm concerned more about job #'s vs actual dollar gross or net. i just want to have a goal for # of eyeglasses sold per day. i've recently stared dispensing eyeglasses and i'm finding it very difficult to get pt's to buy from me. i just wanted to know what is a good number to shoot for per day.

    Hello!

I don't have a doctor here, opened in November '07. Ususally, I sell 1 or 2 per day (some days "the big goose-egg ~ 0...other days 3 WOOHOO! :D)...but, again, I have no doctor, so I don't know how much this info helps in your situation.

I can tell you that when I worked in a practice with 9 doctors, there were 4 LDO's, and 2 non-licensed on the retail floor...we'd sell upwards of 10-15 per day each...actually, probably more than that...I tended to stop counting after a while! :)

Anyway, hope this helps a little!

    jobs

the size of the place has little to do with it, depends on your location, location, location.

one day on a optivan for safety glasses i sold 185 pair, all of my offices that i owned were small, but did good business.

the first office i ever owned,

i lived on one good sale per day for the first year, so if you price right, dont overpay on your rent etc, you can do quite well on a few pair per day

sure the bigger chains etc do more volume , but then the overhead is also a lot greater
