I've never seen these markings on lenses before

A patient had glasses made in China (at least I'm pretty sure that's what he said). At the top temporal corners of the lenses in very noticable (big and deep) etching was 00+. They were progressive, I only did a quick check of the distance power before starting my refraction. I checked with one of the opticians next door and she hadn't seen it before either.

    Anyone seen this before??

I believe that might have been a marking for the lab but it's just a guess from time to time I have noticed strange markings on lenses and had the lab tell me it was done for the lab usage even though they never told me what they were used for. Maybe one of the lab guys can shed some light on the subject.

May be etchings for safety lenses, did you check the CT?

I thought of the same thing but the way the DOC worded it made me think of a lens I had gotten in from the lab with strange markings and the lab said they were markings from the lens company for the labs use. Now granted it was over twenty years ago and I have not seen one since. But it could be safety marks but i assumed that if an OD, he or she should know what safety marks are.

    just my take
