    "Putting MEDICINE in the glasses"

Anyone know where this terminology comes from?
I know it's a misinterpretation of "prescription". Still, it bugs me.

Prescription comes from the Latin/Greek for recipe. Hense a prescription for eyeglasses or medicine is a recipe for medicine. Specially if one comes from the more rural areas.

I've heard from an older optician that it was the way some lazy dr's a very long time ago tried to explain how spectacles worked to under-educated people "that they put medicine in the glass to help you see". Some people took it a little too literally, because I've had an older woman come in (years ago) and explain to me that she needed us to put more medicine in her glasses, cause they chipped and it leaked out. It's sorta sad.

That's probably the same lady who went to the vet and asked him that if the juice leaked out of her wall electrical sockets and the cat lapped it up, would it hurt the cat?

    For Sophisticates

Does anyone realize that many of these rural people that we are so quick to turn our noses up and dismiss as ignorant may have much more knowledge in other areas that we don't have a clue about?
I have known many farmers that could weld, braise, blacksmith, know when and what to plant what with, far beyond even thier college educated rivals with degrees in agriculture.
If you get a hole in your roof do you know what to do?
If the pump in the well outside the farmhouse goes out could you fix it yourself.
Can you cut a 100 ft. tree without hurting yourself?
Can you castrate a bull without damage to yourself or the bull?
Can you find enough to support your family on the land, growing or hunting and fishing in a total depression?
Can you plow a field with a horse, or even a tractor?
Can you do your own plumbing and electrical work?
Those that seem ignorant to us in terms of total knowledge and skills may actually be far ahead of us in so many ways that we ourselves seem ignorant in the ballance.

    Survival

They will be the ones to survive a total catastroff, they know how to live off the land do with, and do without. No college degree could prepare you for that.

    Yup

If the pump in the well outside the farmhouse goes out could you fix it yourself.
No, but we're on city water. My wife does though, watched her dada do it all her life.

Can you cut a 100 ft. tree without hurting yourself?
    Yup

Can you castrate a bull without damage to yourself or the bull?
I don't think that's possible, at least with the bull.

Can you find enough to support your family on the land, growing or hunting and fishing in a total depression?
We grow tomatoes, squash, zuchinni, apples, strawberries, rasberries, basil, parseley, chives, oregano, dill, peas, spinach, carrots, and beans. We usually grow more than we eat so if times were tough we would keep it all and pickle the rest for winter. As for meat I would more than likely barter some veggies and stuff for meat as I am a bit far from good hunting.

Can you plow a field with a horse, or even a tractor?
    Yup

Can you do your own plumbing and electrical work?
Electrical yes, plumbing sorta (I don't like doing it, crap flows through them thar pipes).

Those that seem ignorant to us in terms of total knowledge and skills may actually be far ahead of us in so many ways that we ourselves seem ignorant in the ballance.
I tend to value skills and applications of knowledge over education so I don't find that country folk are ignorant at all. They may not have much use for random facts, but the ones that count they got down pack.

    Chip,
Back in my home town my friedns and family call me a redneck yea haw country boy and where I live I am a metrosexual city slicker. Don't matter where your from someones gotta make fun of you or you's have nothing to do while you were drinking.

This may not be a rural vs. urban thing - I heard this usage ("medicine" in the lens) recently from the trainer for a software package our practice is considering - she wanted to know our base price for plastic lenses without any medicine, and then upgrade prices for various powers, materials, etc. Both highly educated and intelligent, she nonetheless knew nothing about optics and didn't realize that plano is just as exact as any other lens power.

The worst are the ones who think that they'll only have to wear the glasses until the medicine makes their eyes better.

A few years ago, there were TV ads for magic glasses that, after a few weeks wear, would "cure" your vision - they were pinhole goggles, like the old Wachmockets (? spelling) - approx 30 pinholes at various viewing angles in a welder's goggle - you see well while wearing it, but the "medicine" kicked in after the vendor had time to disappear
