Big Smile No more glasses follow up ...............................

This 1930's ad was produced by the Natural Eyesight Institute manufacturer of the Natural Eye Normalizer, a metal device finished in chrome with rubber gaskets fitting the eyes. The device came with five booklets describing treatments and containing logs to record eye excercises. How did it work? It didn't!
The "patient" applied the device to the eyes shutting out all light. The handle on the side of the device allows the gaskets to rotate slightly to massage the eyelids. In theory, the device was supposed to relax the eyes thereby eliminating all vision problems. The device had no effect on vision problems. This device is one of many which sought to cash in on the theory promoted by William Horatio Bates, M.D. who published The Cure of Imperfect Eyesight by Treatment Without Glasses in 1920. Dr. Bates wrongly suggested that relaxation would cure vision problems. Today, many of his followers have altered his theory by suggesting that eye exercise will cure vision problems (and there is a kernel of truth in this for eye exercise is recommended for conditions like lazy eye and crossed eyes). In mystical ways, Bates followers suggest practicing how and where to focus, rotating eyes from left to right and back again to increase peripheral vision and more. For almost all vision problems, eye exercise has no effect. Claims that the Bates theory and exercise may 'eliminate the need for glasses and contacts' are false.

Big Smile No more glasses, follow up

These claims are made today by sellers of pinhole eyeglasses and expensive consultants who lead vision therapy 'classes.' "It is difficult to understand the widespread popularity of the Bates System unless one considers that its followers make up what is essentially a cult. Its practitioners are faith healers who appeal to the gullible, the neurotic, the highly emotional, and the psychosomatic…. ‘Perfect sight without glasses’ is an empty promise," say Russell S. Worrall, O.D. and Jacob Nevyas, Ph.D. (cited by George Nava True II). True relates
"In 1956, Dr. Philip Pollack, a Manhattan optometrist, wrote The Truth About Eye Exercises which exposed the flaws in the Bates System. Alas, Pollack’s book was soon forgotten while the Bates System lives on."
See Can Eye Exercises Improve Vision? by George Nava True II.
Urbane Barrett, owner of the Natural Eyesight Institute, was convicted of mail fraud in 1937 - a year before the U. S. Food and Drug Administration was authorized to regulate medical devices.

    Big Smile Cornea restorer.....................

Levers caused the eyecups to rotate 1/4 turn, thus slightly twisting the eye lids and having no effect on the eye ball or its associated muscles, as claimed.

The Natural Eyesight Institute has its origins in the Barrett Institute, started in 1906, in Los Angeles, by Wesley M. Barrett. In 1927, Wesley's brother, Urbane bought out the mail order business and changed the name to the Natural Eyesight Institute. Urbane was a lawyer, and devoted his skills to writing his "system", and some interesting advertising copy, such as "Divorce eye crutches", and "Give your eyes a new deal".After advertising his eye massager for another ten years, he was finally convicted of mail fraud in 1937. The fraud hearing is reported in a Nov. 1938 Hygeia article.
The Natural Eye Normalizer was claimed to have been invented and patented by Wesley M or Thomas J. Barrett, but no patent exists in either of their names.

    Big Smile Oculiser .............................

A variety of devices designed to modify the shape of the cornea by applying pressure or vacuum were marketed for at least seven decades. Most claimed to cure all types of eye problems and to render eye glasses unnecessary.

The Neu-Vita Oculizer, from England, uses a crank and pulley system to rotate both soft rubber eyecups. The other end of the instrument is fitted with hard rubber eyecups with a concave faced plunger to poke the eye when the rubber bulbs are squeezed. Vacuum can also be applied by covering an air hole and releasing the bulb.

I sure am glad I will no longer have to partake in the Polycarbonate/UV scam that was recently uncovered. This looks like the trend of the future.

I predict that by the 1950's everyone will be finished with glasses and contact lenses forever.

Chris, you are all trying to scam me.

I went to the doctor and he told me my vision is around 20/1000, and said I need 20/40 to drive. What type of scam is that?

What about all of the people who do not want to participate in your money making schemes and wear glasses. I can make by just fine is I squint and move up to about 15cm from the tv.

    Big Smile April 1851........................

April 22, 1851, Jonathan Ball, New York - Means of Renovating and Correcting Sight

A brochure for Dr. Ball's Patent Ivory Eye Cups. The company guaranteed a cure in every case where the cups were applied as directed. They also offered a $10,000 reward (wager) to any physician who could take the same number of cases (thousands) afflicted in the same manner and do them as much real benefit as the eye cups by any other remedy. I assume this didn't include fitting the patient with eye glasses.

Shaped cups of ivory or wood were worn pressed against the eyeballs to reshape the curvature. The apparent marketing success of these cups paved the road for the massage devices to follow. Dr. Ball became a major player in the quack eye massage industry

    Bates was an M.D.?
My appologies to the O.D.s, I had thought all these years he was an O.D.

    I should invent the K.D.

It will be higher than OD or MD, because it comes before them in the alphabet

    Chris Is Scamming Us!

I use stale Saltine Crackers to see better! The pin-hole effect works great! I use an old bread twist tie to hold them together. Works great!

    I caution......use the UNSALTED crackers!

Being a frugal guy, I found that if you're really nice, Wendy's will give you fresh crackers for free if you ask for them.

Don't let the Lasik DOC's see this, can you imagine just press and you have new eye sight. Instead of lasers you can use a wooden or ivory cup. What will they think of next? :D
