LOL...Alberta is the only place that has jobs that pay enough to buy safety specs at that price.
I just called a guy to pick his up, he was one of the $800.00+ jobs. He said, "is there a clip that fits?" I said no, as there really isn't for that model. He said, "can you do a custom clip?" I said yes sir.... profile clip in montreal. His order is now at $974.00.
The oil money keeps on flowin!!:D

I have some interesting info to follow...
I know of 3 optical shops in the US that do nothing or almost nothing but safety eyewear. All are doing quite well financially. All are in industrial areas and potential customers walk past the stores daily on their way to work.
I spent five years doing nothing but Rx safety eyewear and other PPI. We had three mobile vision vans operating in New England and did around 8,000 pairs a year. We dispensed a ton of titanium safety frames with all sorts of PAL lenses but didn't charge for most of them. They were given away as spiffs to companies that purchased other safety product and PPI from us. Finally a major safety eyewear supplier made us an offer that we couldn't refuse.
There was a chain up here did that quite well in safety as it provided bait in volumes to their stores. Last year, Lux purchased this chain and dropped the safety division since it didn't fit their business model. They didn't even try to sell it. I estimate it was worth 1.5-2 million a year in revenue.:hammer:
I believe he is talking about Shoppers Optical.
Precision Optical did the same thing when they changed to Pearl Vision. My optical store was fortunate enough to take over most of their local safety contracts.
Selling safety eyewear? Is it really worth it?
I think it is, mostly because it generates more business. Most of our first time customers are purchasing safety glasses which allows us to provide great service which wins them over everytime. Our customer base is growing everyday thanks to the safety contacts we've aquired.
I guess it depends on how you're set up for safetys. We do quite a bit of safety jobs, but they're all on contracts with GM, Ford, Chrysler etc. We get nothing from these jobs. No fitting fees, nada. The only reason we do it is for the additional dress pairs these people might buy from us. Personally, I don't think it's worth it though. Out of 100 safety jobs we do, we might get one that get dress as well.
Spot on.
The contracts are big automotive contracts. They're the same for EVERYONE in town. You either do them, and potentially get a sale from a dress pair, or you don't, and potentially loose out on it. Our office has chosen to do them. I think it's useless, but who am I? :)
The company you're doing it for has a stronghold in that area and pays $0 for a dispensing fee, which is compeletely wrong and unethical as nobody works for free. You can also thank the automotive industry for squeezing it's suppliers. Most other companies pay a minimum of $20.00, which again is not alot but at least it's something. Things may change soon anyway as that company was acquired and rumour has it the division will be dumped or sold.
We're doing it for more than one company. None of the big 3 pay a fitting fee. I've never worked in a place that had no fitting fees. Low ones, sure. $20, $30 kinda thing. Atleast it's something. This is just rediculous.
In Alberta we get a 44.00 dispensing fee to process a progressive pair of safety glasses.:)
I'm not sure what the fees are for single vision or bi.
Bragging??
These fees should transcend provincial borders....we all should be comparing openly to give our industry continuity. The fees we receive are paid by the OAC = Opticians Association of Canada.
indeed, the CSE...there seems to be a lot of discrepancy between the fees we get whether it be for indian affairs, social assistance, or safety fitting fees BETWEEN THE PROVINCES.
Our industry has been striving for reciprocity for licensed opticians....yet a simple thing like fitting fees, vary wildly.
