Back in the lab for me!

I just had to share that I edged a pair of lenses today for the first time in 5 years. :D And, man, I had forgotten how much I enjoy it!

At my last job, I learned on an Essilor Alpha. Then when I moved to this job, it wasn't necessary for me to edge at all, so I didn't get a chance to learn to use the Weco (don't know the model...sorry). Well, today I badgered our optician into teaching me since we were both bored. And he thinks I'm off my rocker for thinking edging is fun!

    Nothing like it....

Nothing like fabricating something with your hands that will hopefully put a smile on someones face for years to come.:)

We had an older customer come in with 2 pairs of glasses with glass lenses. He wanted them edged down into smaller frames. I'm not really familiar with hand edging glass because I'm young eh? My boss told me to hand edge one of them down and he'd do the other one. It took quite a while but I edged it down perfectly into a frame quite a few eye sizes smaller. The boss just told me to edge a couple of plastics into his other frame. I asked him why he didn't hand edge the glass lenses like he said he was going to. He just gave me this look and said, "nah, it takes too long". What an *** :)

I hope you re-tempered the glass lenses.

like many opticians, I got my start in a lab, and spent 4 years there before moving to dispensing. I always enjoyed lab work, and it was always nice to be "well rounded" in ophthalmics, and have slills both in dispensing and fabricating. Just before I left optical last year, I did an order for 3 pairs of old style 60 mm faceted specs, including the old "3 color tint."
I custom made formers by hand, edged, faceted and polished by hand, tinted, drilled, mounted, and dispensed all three. It took many hours and took every bit of lab skill I had, but it was worth it. Sometimes its nice to work in the lab just to take a break from the ever-demanding public.;)

Dragon............................You are talking to Canada where tempering is only required for kids and safety glasses.

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiif you actually did, you probably never checked them under the polariscope, because to 99.9% they had never been tempered. :bbg:

    drop ball ??

would you not have to drop ball them - again - after trying to edge them down again and re tempering them ?

i remember working with glass about 10 yrs ago - and it was a B ****
as i recall - we would get them all the way thru - and crack - start all over

i am very surprised they passed - after a re edge - and all -

as for our lab - we will not touch glass ( trying to re edge them - ) -
Personally - i just don't feel i would be doing a service to the pt -

i wonder how old those prs where - ? or when he last had a refraction - ?
we have way to many pts that will do almost anything not to have that new rx done - ( even promise their 1st born LOL ) -

if i felt that bad -t hat they could not get a pr of glasses - i would give them
a 10 dollar pr of ft's blanks in plastic - and i would feel better about the whole thing -

    thats just me -

I wondered about that too, but it was pointed out to me that it's in Canada.
