    replacing a Nylon cord.

This is what annoys me about distance learning couses. I work in a RX house concetrating on surfacing, Hardcoating, and AR coating mineral and plastics lenses. No where in the course does it explain the following question so how am i ment to answer it and keep up with continueous assesment! I emailed and asked the responce was research it!

So can anyone explain or give a link about how to Repair a metal frame with lenses attached with a Nylon cords, if one of the cords was broken?

Buy 20# fishing line. Dig out old chord. Thread and press in nasal side. Thread lower temporal hole, pull tight around lens, mark just at hole on temproral side. Remove lens, pull chord 1 to 1.5 mm shorter than mark and thread and press in, trim.
Now take a length of fishing line, insert lens and stretch chord around lens into groove. Do not use ribbon as instructed as it leaves fibers in groove between chord and lens which will be impossible or near impossible to remove.

In some cases, it is helpfull to heat the first end of chord leaving a small ball to revent chord slipping out, but usually not needed.

Just a quick tip for restringing, if you cut the tip of your cord at an angle it makes it easier to insert, but after insertion definately cut perpindicular or melt the end so it won't slip otu so easy as Chip suggested.

After you have pulled the nylon tight around the lens I cut it flush against the frame then reinsert it into the frame giving me a nice tight fit around the lens. Works 100% of the time.

    Idea

Another quick tip is that if you do manage to get the nylon cord to long it can always be shrunk(not sure if that a proper word;))Just use a frame warmer and you can shrink the nylon to the proper length. Just remember to get the cord as close as you can, because it will only shrink so much.

This is what I do and it works well. After I cut it, I angle the tip to make it fit better.

    Redhot Jumper packing tape....................

1 more tip..............to pull the nylon around the lens the easiest way fold some wide packing tape anf use that to pull nylon into groove. Works like a charm and has more pull.
