    Kappa Bevel Error Advice?

I e-mailed the Gerber reps about a weird edger error that happened to me last week. I thought I'd put it up on Optiboard to see if anyone had any idea what happened. It is Error A59 and it happened while putting the safety bevel on a pair of high minus (-10.00 range) polycarb lenses. Error A59 is described in the user manual as "The Grooving Wheel Does Not Turn."

It happened at the point where the groove wheel reached the thickest part of the lens edge and the wheel just bit in to the lens and stopped. It occurred not just once, but similarly on both lenses. It's as if the Kappa can't put a safety bevel on a higher minus. Is that something normally expected? I can see the advantage to doing more safety bevels by hand.

Here are the photos of the error in process.
Thanks, everyone, for the real-world advice.

You answered your question, at the thickest part of that -10.00 the wheel is biting too deep on the lens causing it to jam. You are much better off using a handstone on those thick jobs. You can calibrate the safety bevel to take off less, but your thin jobs probably wont touch at all.
Its the nature of the beast.

I have had this issue also. High powers (minus) I use safety bevel setting #1, which is very light, or none at all. I then do the rest by hand. All others I use the #2 or #3 setting with no hand work.

Thanks for your replies. I had a feeling that this was possibly the limit of this technology. Too bad.

    Happy New Year!
