    Idea

Had a customer today that wanted only one lens replaced in glass PGX, and I informed him the lenses would not change color density the same. My question is will both lenses ever change evenly enough so it's not noticeable or is there anything can be done to bring them closer. Customer did not want to pay to replace both lenses.

They probably will never change exactly the same, Check to see how the lens was hardened, that will make a bih difference. It will be either Chem or air hardened. Sometimes the old lens can be retempered But I would be very cautious about doing that. I would say just temper it like the old lens and say thats the best you could do. Or just tell him if it was you, you would go with both lenses so they would change the same and be stronger. old scratched or pitted lenses are NOT as impact resistant and should be replaced.

    Rich,

I seem to recall that if you put the older PGX lens in simmering hot water for a short period of time, this would help it go back to it's earlier changeability. They may be closer to changing if you were to heat treat the new one as well. Hope this is helpful.

Check the age of the old lenses. Different lots and batches may produce different coloration. Also, the older the original lens is, the darker it stays, so it might be wise to push a little harder to get them to pick up the second lens.

Unless they are both the same power and substance then it is very unlikly that they will ever change the same, We will make single photochromic lenses but always at their risk. The paitent wont notice the diffrence it is people looking at the lenses that will tell them they are not the same. If he wont buy a pair just tell him they wont match and when he comes back he will want the other lenses making but that maybe that will be the same.

    Hey there Rich,

I generally inform the customer of the outcome - that the lenses will have unequal color and that it is in their best interest to invest in a new set all together. You can use any of the reason mentioned by your colleagues. With that said, whatever they decide you will come out ahead of the game.

Ohh and yes the lenses almost always will not color equally dark nor fast.

Put the old lens in the salt/glass bead pan for 10~15 min. Then let it cool. They will be just fine.
