    Semi-Rimless restring sizing

Is there a quick way to determine the correct amount of line to restring a lens mounting on a semi-rimless? It always seems to be a matter of trial and error. After a while, staffers get a feel of what is correct, but a general rule would be nice.

    Thanks for the replies. :)

take the old wire, remove it cleanly, and measure it

I never do that, I prefer the trial and error, because it is so much more darn fun. But ya.

Also, if you are just a little slightly loose, take the lens out (very important), go over to your hot air blower, and turn it on for about 5 to 10 seconds. The wire will shrink. It is like sliced bread.

So, that's why my wife's spare pair in her glove compartment keeps breaking every few years! :shiner:

When Logo was getting popular they ran a few workshops. Their technique works every time.
Attach the cord nasally. Hold the lens in place and pull the cord around to the temporal side and hold it against the frame. Mark or cut the cord right between the two holes. Put the lens down, string the frame, inert the lens. Go on to the next job!
    Hope this helps.

    YES, YES, YES!

Great rule. I'm on my way to give it a spin.

God, we loved Logo, too. They went the way of Rodenstock.

    Never

Actually our practice did a high level of rimlons. Did it a lot, and did not get breakage.

Of course, the nylon will rot over time. Years ago I had one just fall apart on my while watching tv. The frame was several years old.

Rich is totally and 500% right.

To add to it, if it is a metal frame cut the thread at the first hole........................and there will be no more trial and error methods.

For a while I was the rimless guy at an Essilor wholesale lab. I grooved and mounted about 200 rimless per day.

    Here is my technique:

    • Insert string in nasal side first and in the bottom hole of the temple side leaving a lot of slack.
    • Mount the lens and then pull the string tightly around the lens.
    • Once tight, pull the string downward creating a Kink in the string.
    • Take out the lens and pull the string back exposing your kink.
    • Cut at an angle directly on the kink creating a sharp edge to easily mount through small holes.
    • Insert the string through the second hole in the temple side
    • Mount your lens.
This system takes about 15-20 seconds and works perfectly EVERY TIME or your money back :D

Personally I like the melted end single hole in the eyewire style that is popular. Just like Optical LabRat said except instead of cutting a lighter and some melting do the trick.

Ditto, now there is a side effect to this. Everyone in the office just instinctively hands you the semi's to restring.

I do this almost except I put it through the first hole on the temple side, pull it tight around the lens and cut it off flush. I take the lens out and thread it through the other hole and it fits perfectly.
