    I've Been Really Busy Lately

... and haven't been around these parts much. I'm just having a 'moment' and wish to thank, in advance, all those Optiboarders who are experts in the field of Contact Lens Dispensing, for all the information, assistance, and brain thumping, that I'm going to be asking for over the next couple years while I'm doing my NAIT Contact Lens course! That's right: After nearly 20 years in the biz I'm finally going to go into this (don't ask why I didn't before, it would take too long to explain) and I just know I'll have questions and need advice.

So, therefore, I'm brought to the question: Who all here is an expert contact lens fitter??????????

As long as you understand my disclaimer

I have manufacturing experience with RGP lenses and worked mostly on specialty designs at a time when it was all done by hand. This gave me a nice foundation and tactile understanding that was unique to the hands on nature of the work and it has helped me time and again. If I see a question and I think I can aid you in your understanding with anything I will reply. I look forward to being of some assistance, as long as you indemnify me from any liability. I liked your reply.

Congrats on taking the course. I'm not much of a contact person, but if something comes up that I can help with I'll chime in.

YOu should have gotten into this 25~40 years ago back when there was money in it. Now you may be learning a dead and unprofitable art.

You mean we are supposed to "fit" contacts??

No really, I agree with Chip, lots of time, little $$. I took some CE's this past weekend and one on CL'S stressed to charge for your time. He then proceded to say he charges $25 for an I&R, which I believe would take about 45 minutes to an hour. I'm in the hole big time at that rate, so I don't mess with them.

    Chip, Chip, Chip.....

25 years ago I wasn't in the biz, 40 years ago I was 4 years old. So there.:D

... anyhoo, one of the things I love about OptiBoard is the fact that one can post a question, comment, diatribe, or vent, and count on a response whether it be good, bad, or just downright ugly. Actually, I use OptiBoard in one of the CE workshops I do, as a suggestion for a source of information and a learning tool for Opticians to design their own learning programs.

OptiBoarders Rock! Thanx so much for everyone who's so far chimed in. I will appreciate it and will be taking advantage of all the knowledge here.

    I dabble...

and consider myself fairly knowledgeable, as I'm NCLE advanced and a fellow of the Contact Lens Society of America. I also have an 8 hour review course, and teach contact lens fitting a lot.

Like Dianne I do more than dabble but I still would not look at as a profit making use of your time in today's environment. If I didn't have a large practice and large following built up over the last 50 years, I wouldn't find it worth doing today. I still have doubts about it being worthy of my time. I also spent and hour and a half rigging a broken frame yesterday for a total of $15.00. Worthwile, no but it's what I do.
