    Recommend a Movie Thread

I thought this could be interesting. We can recommend movies that we have seen in here.

I just watched The Weatherman with Nicholas Cage. Reminded me a lot of Matchstick Men (same actor). He has really come into his own with these type of movies. The story is about a Weather Man who is coming to terms with the shallow life he has lived up to this point, and his inability to be a father and husband.

    Definitely a must see.

I have not seen Sicko yet. While I am pro-public health care, I do not like Michael Moore. I feel whatever he attaches himself to hurts the project

Amen! Whether you are pro or con public health care - you speak the truth. I think soon people will begin to see that he bends the truth just like Rush Limbaugh.

Two things got me. Fahrenheit 911 when the mother did not want to go to the Whitehouse anymore to protest her son's death. He just kept pushing her.

Another was an older one of his, when he was doing a book signing. A lady came by to get her book signed, and he asked how she is doing. She said she was laid off. He kept asking questions if she has kids, how she is going to support herself, and such, just trying to get her to cry for the camera. He is just as heartless as the people he calls heartless.

Gattaca (if you've never seen this movie- its well worth buying/renting the DVD).

The Simpsons Movie (good for a few laughs- and I like multi-level humor).

National Treasure (one of my favorites- Nicolas Cage is awesome).

Ocean's 11, 12, 13 (George Clooney & company have an excellent back-and-forth quality about them that makes these movies work really well).

Matrix (sorry, its simply the best movie of all time)

Master & Commander (older as well, but crank up the surround sound and let er rip)

The Aviator (if you missed this one- rent/buy it)

The Dirty Dozen (a classic that's great on a rainy afternoon)

We have the Weather Man, but have never gotten around to viewing it...

Here is the First of my top 10

Amadeus (1984) it won 8 Oscars and is my favorite of all time. It is a loosely based historical account of the life of Mozart as told by the Court Composer Antonio Salieri to a priest while he is confined in an insane asylum after professing the murder of Mozart. The story is about how Salieri, born with the desire to worship God through music and uniquely gifted to appreciate it, struggled to come to terms with the fact that God gave the gift of creating music to “an obscene little man” who wasted it. It is remarkable to watch the transformation of a musician - talented in his own right - seemingly the only one who can hear the voice of God in the music, convinced that he hears laughter at him. So in hatred at God for giving him the desire and making him mute and for making him helplessly watch as this perfection is wasted, he vows to do all that he is able to destroy God's vessel. The look on the priest's face at the end as he is absolved of his mediocrity wonderfully sums up the tragic misunderstanding Salirei made. Mozart saw beauty through his ego Salieri saw perfection transcend it.

I thought we were talking recent movies. If you want to go back, my all-time favorite is Casablanca while in the musicals category it would have to be Singing in the Rain.

    One of my favorites!

Harry's list mirrors mine. Godfather, Scarface and Carlito's way=Excellent. I will add Goodfella's to that list. I can watch any of these over and over again.

I will add a few more!

1.) Throw in just about any Clint Eastwood movie!
2.) Escape from New York-(I watched this as a kid-loved it-I just wish I could find a copy of it to watch it again)
3.) Saving Private Ryan-I think everybody should see this movie at least once.

    The Legend Trip

I saw the premier at the Times Cinema (they sell beer with the popcorn!) in Wauwatosa last night. Local independent film maker.

Not your typical Hollywood horror flick, that's for sure. I was looking over my shoulder the rest of the evening. More gore than I care for, but well done and nicely directed.

Here's a link to the trailer-

I have my "sewing room" movies. Ones that I love and have watched so much that I can do dialogue. I play them when I'm sewing and I don't have to watch too closely because I already know what's going on.

    Casablanca
    Gone With the Wind
    The Way We Were
    Star Wars
    Singing in the Rain
    Showboat
    The Sound of Music
    West Side Story
    The King and I
    Goldfinger
    Thunderball

    Kinda eclectic I guess

    The Red Violin

One of the few movies I'll watch repeatedly. Also, one of the few movies that makes me have kleenex on hand every time I see it. Great musical score, honest acting.

Lets see.. I have very diversified tastes..

    My top 5 are..

Singing in the Rain (Classic you just gotta love!)

The Princess Bride (Once again.. a timeless classic. My 11 year old son loves this movie too!)

Killer (Chow yun Fat, not sure if John Woo.. but excellent movie..even if the ending made me scream!)

Kiki's Delivery Service (well anything from Studio Ghibli. Great family animated films that have powerful messages in them)

Meltdown (Jet Li, the box sounded so serious... Man tracking down the evil Doctor who blew up his wife and child... and it turned out to be one of the most comedic action films.... Kung Fu Hustle came close!)

Now there is also those films that you don't' really place in your top movie collection but every time you see them on TV flipping through, you end up stopping and watching them....

For me those are Starship Troopers and The Fifth Element. Have no idea why they always draw me in.. but they do.

    As for Recent Movies:
The Simpson's Movie was good for a few laughs. I recommend a matinée though! (sorry Pete! :) )

Meet The Robinsons was an excellent family film. Maybe my favorite Disney flick (currently tied with Tarzan). Great themes including family, believing in one's self, and its ok to fail as long as you "Keep moving forward".. I loved how they let kids know that its when you fail, that you learn the most.. Which in turn will help you succeed if you are persistent.
