Higher Education, Advanced Certification, or Dual Certification

Alright I have a question and it came about from an optician who e-mailed me and told me that they could not get a job because they were over qualified and I have more than a few times run into that in the past myself. I am starting to notice a trend and would like to see if this patten goes outside my small pond.

Well Harry... sad but true.. I've known several employers not wanting to hire someone with certifications because instantly they felt they would have to pay more. :hammer:

Yes, unfortunatley living in CA I am stuck in retail to make any kind of decent money because I have both my certs/licenses and I know CL fitting...I guess my experience is TOO valuable to be used at a doctors office because they only want to pay me 9 dollars an hour.

I didn't vote in the poll b/c I don't have my degree yet. However, in the licensing state of NC, many people with degrees and advanced certs work for offices as the manager under which other unlicensed employees work. Pay rate is good, and since an office must have at least one license (LDO, OD, or MD) to open business, they are forever in high demand.

i work for 2 md's and 1 od. when i started here the optical was making around 200,000 a year. now we make almost 600,000 a year. i am the only optician here. i do all the edging and dispencing. when i started i knew i could bring in more money for the practice so i ask them to pay me by how much more money i brought in. they did! so i make great money now! but most dr's dont want to pay for what you know or for what you an do for the practice. they look at what the avrage price for an optician is. and that is what they will get an avrage optician! SHOW THEM THE MONEY!

I hav made this agreement with 2 practices in the past and it has lead to greed and the doctor reniggin on the agreement, but I agree if we got paid for what we could do lots of opticians would be making more money and lots more doctors would belong to their local country clubs.:D

Wave Not a lot of money, but great office, great job

Well, the optom office I work at doesn't pay near the top, by any standards, but doesn't pay bad. Have run ito the overqualified situation, the office there wanted salespeople, not opticians. All in all, happy with where I am, helping the people I help.
