    Office Hours

Could you give me some feedback?

What hours are your office or store open?

I am of the belief that if your open until 6:00 every night, that people(patients, clients, customers) will gripe that your not open until 7:00. Or, if your open on Saturdays 9:00-12:00, that they will b*t&h that your not open early enough, or close at 3:00.

In many places in Europe...........open at 7.30 am so people going to work can drop of frames to repair or put new lenses in and be ready when going home.

Close 1 hour at lunch time from 12 to 1 pm.

    Close at 6.30 pm

    Monday closed all day.

    Sun ... Closed
    Mon ... Closed
    Tues ... 10-8
    Weds ... 10-8
    Thurs ... 10-6 (Location 1), 9-5 (Location 2)
    Fri ... 10-5
    Sat ... 9-3

Very few complaints about our closing at 3 on Saturdays; however, once or two or three times we have ended up staying late Fri & Sat to wait for someone whose just "minutes away" to swing in and pick up something they had to have before the weekend.

People like the 8:00 close Tues & Weds; the evening appointments are usually the first to book up, especially during the school year, and give folks who commute to work or can't get time off a chance to get in.

There are five of us between two offices and one doctor who alternates his days between them. The office without the Doc on has two people working in it, the office with the Doc on gets the third person which means a few of us work both stores. Not too bad, alternating locations, it breaks up the week a bit and give you a shorter drive home one day a week.

We are an ophthalmology office and our hours are M-F 8:30 - 5:00. We tried Sat. hours for appts. and got very few appts and many no showed. Later we got an OD and were opened Tues. nights until 7pm (exam appts scheduled till 6pm and again didn't always fill the slots and many no showed. The OD left and the optical still stayed open until 7, but rarely did anyone come in. Cut it back to 6pm and still very few people came in. So we stick to the 8:30-5:00. We occasionally get people that gripe about the hours, but we can't justify payroll expense for maybe 1 person to come in for a repair. If I know someone can't make it by 5, I aways let them know if they call ahead, I'll make sure I'm there for them. This has worked out pretty well. Though I must point out, we are in a rural area. We used to close for lunch due to staffing issues, but since I took over, we've added another staff member and now stay open through the lunch. This has made the patient's the happiest. However, the biggest gripe I get now is that there's not enough staff there through lunch, and people have to wait. Apparently people feel we shouldn't be allowed a lunch between the hours of 11-2! If I have a staff member out and someone at the other location, then I don't take a lunch so we don't have to close.

    Mon-Fri 10:00A.M. -6:00 P.M.
    Sat: 10:00A.M-3:00 P.M.
My customers actually tell me they are glad to see me get some time off when I close for a day.
I stay open to 6:00 because I once read that 80% of optical sales occur between 5 & 6 P.M.
I acutally get to work and do scutt and ordering between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. Often stay as late as 2:00 A.M. with the doors locked cooking eyes and doing repairs.

Must admit that at my age and being a one man store, I would find a four day week highly desireable.

Two days a week until 8pm, two days until 6, Fridays until 5 and Sat 9-2, closed Sundays and Holidays. I am always surprised at the number of calls we get just before a major holiday(even Christmas) to ask if we are open. Generally foreigners. We would do well to stay open more evenings but I'm not up for more than two and that's one too many for me. Also working every Saturday has always been part of the deal but my next job will be NO weekends. Our evenings and Saturday appointments fill up very quickly, Saturday walk ins make the week. On Saturdays we Rock!

    Ideas:

Have some variability in your schedule to capture a wide range of available times.
    Examples:
At least one or two late nights ('till 7 or 8)
A Saturday now and then that fills up and does not promote no-shows. If you're open too many Saturdays, you'll see too many no-shows.

Opening at 8 or 9 is generally expected and satisfactory. Have a morning off during the week if you feel it is worthwhile. You won't find it tough to redirect appointments to a consistent and dependable schedule.

If you can afford a reliable staff person to man the phone while you're out, your patients will appreciate the customer service even if it just means that they'll have to visit you at another time.

Don't imagine that keeping your doors open longer will insure a better bottom line. There are costs associated with long hours and one of them is your sanity.

Like AutumN, my new job is with a OMD group, 9-5, M-F. We stay if there are still patients coming out from exams or if someone needs to come later, and let's us know.

The hours are one of the many reasons I love this job!:D

We have a lot of commuters to Boston who experience a variable 90 minute commute. They like the saturday hours and prefer them to rushing home for an weekday evening appt. And on Saturdays people prefer to start earlier (except the sleeping teenagers). We may soon change to 8-12 on saturdays.

This is an optometrists office and a retail optical shop. We are open M-F from 8-5 and we close 12-1 for lunch. We used to be open on saturday and late on thursday, but as you all have noted, it's never enough. Now we go straight M-F

As usual, I will give a lengthy analysis...

If you're an ophthalmology practice, you can do 9-5 or even less. People are sick, so they'll make time. (Plus, you are on call, have surgery days, etc, anyway, so you deserve a reasonable clinic schedule.)

    If you're a private OD/private optical:
1.) That's high-falutin' (meaning: successful and established), you do 9-5
2.) That's hungry (meaning: me), you do a hybrid schedule
3.) That's really, really hungry, you do commerical hours

    If you're a commercial optical:
You do 10-8 or 9pm. You have mall hours to meet.

    My schedule:
    Monday (real Dr. mode) 9-5
    Tuesday (hungry optican mode) 11-7
    Weds: no patients scheduled
    Thurs (hungry) 11-7
    Friday (real Dr.) 9-5
First Saturday (hungry) 9-1 and overbooked. Other Saturdays: forget it.

drk, why do all OD's I know take off Wed? All the ones around me take off Wed. You'd think if you opened you'd be the only doc in town practicing on a Wednesday!

In optometry school they tell them that they must close Wednesday or they would go to hell...........and for the last 100 years they all close that day. :bbg:
