    Thickness calipers=index of lenses!

I noticed a very interesting thing the other day. I observed an Optician( a sorry excuse for one) take a lens thickness caliper, guage a lens, and proceed to tell the patient that because his lenses were 1.6mm center that they were 1.6 high index!:angry::angry:

    UGH!!!

This made me gasp! The real sad part is this *Optician* has been in the business for like twenty years. Or should I say 1 year experience twenty times.

I heard that Zeiss has a new lens material out.

Its in 3.00 high index. It's really thin...no wait...its really thick?

    Oh...I'm so confused.

Actually, the 1.6 measurement describes the aspect ratio of the lens, and is most desirable for wide screen TVs.

I remember thinking like that for a while twenty some years ago. An old optician took pity on me and explained index of refraction vs. center thickness. I was grateful. I hope that you set this person straight since it seems no one else has taken the time to do so.
