If You Were to Change Occupations...

What would YOUR CHOICE of occupation/profession be outside the optical industry? Not what would bring in the heftiest paycheque, but what would give you the greatest sense of self-fulfillment? This just came up in conversation between a couple friends and I; interestingly, we all knew of several former welders who became chefs, a few truckers who went back to school for business degrees, and a number of former teachers who became social workers (only the last makes any sense to me).

So, just out of curiosity, what would we optical peoples want to do? I'll start my own thread out by saying, overwhelmingly, I want to be a chef when I grow up (read: retire). I dream of working in other people's kitchens as the 'guest chef' on weekends, having the run of the place to create and play with food. I love food and working with food; its amazing what happens to a regular old piece of chicken when you sear it, add some stock, tarragon, salt and pepper... And wine. Ahhh, the wine......

    Animal rehab center.

All of our pets belonged to someone else before they came to us. Even my parrot (who was abused) and my husband's savannah monitor (which we donated to a herb center)

Not all animal shelters know what to do with creatures like lizards, parrots or even hedgehogs.

Operate a small Bed and Breakfast, with an antique shop on the side.

I have no experience for either, just a powerful and long-running daydream!

Back in the early 80's I wanted to open a coffee shop with quirky greeting cards - (not starbucks type drinks, just really good coffee :bbg: )

I've always kind of wanted to be a 2nd grade teacher (specifically, second grade - the kids are still somewhat sweet at that age :o ) but knowing myself, I'd probably haul off and give a few "what fors" and parenting advice too many times :finger: (to the parents)

I have long dreamed of being a lawyer but knowing myself, I'd get really frustrated at having guilty people get off ... I try not to think about it.

Since I'm both an Optician and a Nurse/Midwife, I would probably go into diamond cutting (I have training, just no experience).

I guess I'd have to fall back on being a marine biologist.

No, actually, I'd probably go into home PC repair.

    going back to school ??

    hi all -

i have been seriously looking into going back to school - for mortuary science - and funeral directing -

i don't want to be looked upon like i am crazey - or morbid ( LOL ) -
but - there may be allot of cross functionality - from beign able to work well with ones hands - and the field - they say it is also an art - as well as an honor to help families during their difficult time - i really think i could give back allot -

furthmore - i had worked many years in our local inpatient hospice dept as well as home care - - i had a chance the privlidge to help families during this difficult time - and although it is very sad - i think this field of mortuary science and funeral directing - i could do a little part - in helping families through it - and i have put many of my fears about dealth to rest - and i am no longer scared of it ( as long as it is not mine - i guess ) LOL

my cousins family actually owes a funeral home near by - and i was offered an apprenistship - through them - they have this apprentiship for 6mnths of time - so that folks can see if they want to pursue it futher - and i really would like to take them up on the offer - however - as we all know - TIME is VERY limitted - and with a 1 yr old at home - i am not sure if now - is the right time -

plus with 13 years in optics - i am getting that ich for a change -
