Mom came in today with a not quite 3 year old boy who has inherited from dad Wagner Stickler syndrome. The child is photophobic, dad is not. The Ophthailmologist is asking for an appropriate tint. I'm thinking poly with transition or would I be better off with a solid tint? If so what color? Do any of you have any experience with this condition? I believe a tint on poly transition won't work.

What is the VA with this RX? Also consider Trivex material or Transitions CR-39 with a 20% Gray dye tint with a 3mm CT because of the ABBE. As the patient gets older a flash mirror may also be of help. We have used AR as well as second pair in a polarized Rx Sun with wrap.
To follow up on this little whipper snapper, I dispensed the glasses yesterday. We went with a transition poly with a clip in a Fisher-Price "Marshmello" to see how he responds.
Dispensing first time eyeglasses to toddlers like this I find is one of the great rewards of retail Opticianry. He was sucking on his pacifier to beat the band but when I put the glasses on the look on his face was priceless as he stopped sucking and just stared into the distance. Too bad the parents didn't bring a camcorder it was a Kodak moment.
Bev- I have a call in to the doctor for the VA but haven't heard back yet. Also you say I can tint transition cr-39 without effecting the chemical? How much more than 20%? This is a no no on poly right?
The Stickler syndrome specialist says that the photophobia is probably unrelated to the condition as glaucoma doesn't seem to be present.

I've tinted all forms of Transitions (CR39, Poly, Trivex, 1.60 and 1.67 to be specific) and I've always been able to get the base color to at least 25% without adversely effecting the photochromic abilities of the lens.

Nope. As long as you take care to not over-expose the lenses to heat. I generally tint all photochromics like I'm tinting 1.60/1.67/Trivex. I turn the pot temp down to around 180 and keep the lenses submerged for no more than a few minutes at a time. With the CR39 lenses they'll tint well before those few minutes - with other materials it's usually a two maybe three insertions into the pot.
I'd be interested to see what Chris Ryser's microwave tints would do to photochromic lenses. I personally only use BPI tints, but now that I'm in this private practice I don't feel like stinking this place up with the tint vat, so I only turn it on for this purpose - and then only for VSP jobs because my private lab has no problems tinting photochromics when asked. If Chris' tints would do the job I'd certainly look into using them.
