I know that someone on this board does phoroptor cleaning/calibration, but I've forgotten who.
Joel ? I know that Ginny did it, but haven't heard from her in awhile...
Any ideas ?

up in your area that used to do it under Great Lakes Opthalmic Repair. His name is Todd Bartus. The number I have for him is (248) 706-0700. I haven't used him in a couple of years, but those guys generally don't move much.
Good luck to you!!

This prompts me to bring up... where does one learn to clean a phoropter? Is there a manual? :) I'm the kid that took everything apart just to put it back together again... but a phoropter makes me nervous.

I think we use RH Burton. I will check the office records in the morning.
I'll tell the wife that's what I'm doing to her phoropter ... I'll be sure to use hers and not mine :)
When we bought our practice, the phoropters had never been serviced. The local guy came and picked em up (now retired) - and when he brought them back, he said they were the nastiest internally of any he had ever seen. There was literally a pile of crud that he picked out of em.

You're not supposed to tell your wife everything. Only if it goes south . . . . Honey there was a small explosion, but don't worry, I wasn't hurt. Your phoropter, however . . .!!
Good luck to you!!

When you're in a 2-doc practice and one of em is your wife... she's gonna find out. Even if she was on the road every day, she'd somehow find out. She's even got my staff convinced they should rat me out.
Constant supervision should mean that I can never get in trouble, right? Hah!

Phoropters, at least AO, Reichert Phoropters are not taken apart with screw drivers.
Knobs and other parts are attached with spline screws, a casual glance will make you think they are hex screws, but they are not! Trying to loosen a spline screw with a hex wrench will strip out the head of the screw making it difficult or impossible to remove. Service training is offered by Reichert to their dealers technicians. Sometimes you get a capable technician to service your instruments. The cylinder banks in a Phoropter are complicated and should not be taken apart with out some previous experience and a way to check the axis of all sixteen cylinder lenses. There are two banks of cylinder lenses in each side of the instrument. Each bank, or wheel contains four lenses. Each lens rotates in synchronization with the other seven lenses, the axis dial, the Jackson cross cylinder and the wheel that indicates the power of the lens combination. The old RxMaster is even more complicated.
