Be careful. This old OD friend of mine shows me his closet full of old glass lenses every time I go to see him. I have to tell him that those were made before industry standards require minimun thickness on lenses. I guess he could sell them overseas.

You mean the impact resistance requirement? I was thinking 1972, but the FDA says 1976 (the 70's are a little hazy now - come to think of it, they were a little hazy then).

If you can remember the 70s you weren't really there.

I'm pretty sure they were right there between the 40's and the 50's... no, wait, that was the 80's. The 70's must have been later.

    Wait...the 70's are OVER??!!

But I just saw That 70's Show on TV.
You were in there too, Fezz!

I thought the impact resistance standard became effective in 1971, when I started. But that was then..
Anyhoo, most stock lenses were not made to excessively thin centers or edges, even the old glass ones.

Although... years ago we had a couple of Asian customers come in near closing time to get a pair of glasses adjusted. One of the opticians heated the temporal edge of the frame where they were splayed out a bit, and pushed the frame back around and TING! -the glass lens broke. We quickly neutralized the lens, told them we broke it and will replace it. It was around a -4.00 and they were totally horrified at how thick the replacement cr-39 lens was. After further examination the lens was glass,Sand 1 (light beige) coated, then AR coated. All this untempered - with a 0.4mm center thickness!
I told them it was illegal to make a lens like that in the US, then he asked if we'd cut them if he supplied the lenses, and we agreed. he said he got them from a friend of his in Taiwan that ran a lab, and cost him only $10.00 US. So he got some replacements and we oh so cautiously edged them successfully. I told him that he could be jogging and run into a June Bug and they'd break.

Of course not! I made him sign a waiver. Like I would heat treat a lens with a color coat and AR already done.
