    Branded and Non-branded Progressive Lenses

We have had many discussions on the board about different brand name progressive lenses. Everyone has given input about which is their favorite and why.

There are many non-branded progressive lenses on the market from different labs, factories, etc. My questions to you are:

    1) What percentage of your progressive lens sales are non-branded?

    2) What percentage of your branded progressive lenses do you have AR coated?

    3) What percentage of your non-branded progressive lenses are AR coated?

    4) Given your choice between a standard AR and a premium AR (non-branded), which would you choose for a non-branded progressive lens?

    5) What is an acceptable delivery time for surfaced lenses with AR and without AR?

    6) If the cost was less, would a delay in delivery time become acceptable?

    Thank you for your input.

    Hi Doc . . .

I hope things are going well for you. As a discounter probably 40% are non branded. Another 40% low end name brand and 20% premium.

Probably 80% of our premium progressive have AR. Probably half that on the low end name brand and half again on the non branded stuff.

I usually try and find the best value for our warranted AR. Its usually not Alize, Teflon, Advantage or Super Hi Vision.

I'm looking for 1 to 2 day turn around on non coated, 3 to 5 for an AR lens. I can't really strech beyond that even if the money was better. There's just too much competition.

So are you going to start surfacing?? Good luck to you whatever you do!!

Days where my gratitude exceed my expectations are very good days!

    Hi FB,

Nice to hear from you. Yes, we are surfacing and will look to enter the US market after VEE. (or should I say re-enter?)

We currently are selling in the Asian market which has a very high AR usage. There is no demand for brand name progressives and our buyers are more interested in knowing the materials we use (1.49, 1.56, etc) and the corridors available for progressive lenses.

All orders placed (unocated, hard coated and AR) can be delivered to the US customer 3 days after ordering. Would the 3 days work for your non AR product

We will have 2 non-descript (read that as low tech) booths at VEE (4068-A and 4068-B). If you are there come by and say hello.

    Doc.

I hope to stop by your booth to see samples of surfaced and stock lenses.

One question will be if shipping costs will negate cost savings on product.

Looking forward to seeing you. On better product the shipping cost is nominal and if you are ordering AR product then the cost savings more than covers the shipping. Again volume is the key so that shipping costs can be spread across larger quantities of lenses.

Maybe a silly question but what are non-branded lenses called?
    Every lens comes from somewhere?

By non-branded we are referring to non-Essilor, Zeiss/SOLA, HOYA, etc.

When we refer to brand name ophthalmic lenses we typically mean lenses from a multinational manufacturer of ophthalmic lenses (Essilor, Hoya, Zeiss/Sola, Pentex, Nikon, etc.). I would consider Jai Kudo a wholesale distributor selling ophthalmic lenses under their Jai Kudo name.
Most lens wholesale/distrbutors have their own brand name for their private label product.

Are you currently doing any freeform in China? I want premium products and the brand is of no concern. 100% with a premium non glare.

    1) We will be offering freeform at a later date.
    2) We do offer a premium non glare coating.
